“Okay, don’t panic,” Marguerite said soothingly. “You’ve already put in so much effort; I’m sure he knows how you feel. Maybe you should just be direct with him. At least you’ll get an answer, one way or another, and you won’t have to keep torturing yourself like this.”

Seeing Laura so distraught made Marguerite’s heart ache. Her own life had been so chaotic lately that she hadn’t had time to think about her friend’s situation. She felt a twinge of guilt. After all, she was the one who had suggested Laura go take care of Luke in the first place. She never imagined it would end up causing so much pain. It seemed Laura was giving her all, while he was just passively accepting it without reciprocating.

“Laura, I have to be honest,” Marguerite said, her tone softening. “You’re so smart and dedicated at work. How can you be so clueless when it comes to love?”

“I’m calling him right now,” Marguerite declared, her voice firm with frustration. “We’re going to get a straight answer.”

She picked up her phone but walked out of the office before dialing. She didn’t want to risk saying something that might hurt Laura, who was already on the verge of breaking down.
