“I was actually planning to call you,” Luke replied. “We should talk. If it’s convenient for you, come over. I can send my driver to pick you up.”
“No, that’s okay, Mr. Zade. Don’t trouble your driver. I can get there myself. I’ve just finished work for the day.”
Half an hour later, she arrived at his house. He was lying in bed, looking pale and bored. He hated being confined like this, a prisoner in his own home.
“Mr. Zade,” Laura said softly, unable to meet his eyes.
“Laura, your boss already spoke to me,” he began gently. “I know I handled this poorly. I should have been honest with you from the start that I didn’t see a future for us.”
“We’re just not a good match. I’d be happy to be friends, and I’m truly grateful for how well you took care of me. You were incredibly attentive.”
He paused, letting his words sink in. “But feelings are different. You can’t force them. I hope you can understand that.”
“I actually got a gift for you while I was in the hospital. I wanted to thank you properly.”
