“Mr. Zade, the only reason I came here today was to clear the air,” Laura continued. “I don’t want things to be awkward between us, especially since we’ll have to continue working together.”

She offered him a small, sad smile. “And don’t worry, I will never tell anyone about your feelings for our boss.”

She had never mentioned it to Marguerite, not once. Even though Luke’s affection was obvious to her, her boss seemed completely oblivious, seeing him only as a good friend.

“Thank you for keeping my secret,” he said, his voice soft. “And thank you for taking care of me. I did try, you know. I tried to see if I could develop feelings for you, but I just couldn’t. My heart already belongs to someone else.”

“Even though she and I will probably never be together, there’s no room for anyone else. So please, don’t blame me.”

“I fell in love with her after my last relationship ended, years ago. I thought I might finally have a chance after she broke up with her last boyfriend, but then… someone else came into her life.”
