Hera’s stunned silence did a number on her friends‘ confidence. She acted as if she had only just learned the truth about

Sebastian.

They could not believe their misfortune. Why did it feel like they had become collateral damage in the couple’s quarrel?

Ms. Bishop? Say something! You’re scaring me!”

“Please, just tell Mr. Grimwald that we’ve learned our lesson! We’ll never look down on anyone again, I swear!”

“Exactly! We were bastards. We were awful! But your husband is a great man. Great men usually have the biggest hearts, right? Right?!”

Their desperate pleas finally pulled Hera out of her thoughts. Yet when she looked at the man on stage, nothing about him felt tamiliar. He seemed like a stranger standing far away.

“He didn’t tell me anything about this. I had no idea,” she said flatly. “I can’t ask him to forgive you. I don’t even think I’m exempt from his wrath.”

“No way! You’re his wife. He has to care about you, ex or not! Besides, he’s a great man, right? He’ll forgive you!”

“Exactly! You’re too beautiful for any man to stay angry with for long!”

“You know how men are. They like to feel strong and dominant. We need to respect their needs as women, you get what I mean? We should be more tolerant, more docile. And a little flirting and pleading never hurt anyone.”

Her friends no longer acted like her friends. Their tune had changed, and suddenly Hera was the one placed beneath Sebastian in the relationship dynamic. She was expected to be weak. After all, she was only the CEO of some company. Sebastian was the mentor of a prodigy.

Their words did not encourage her at all.

“No. It’s pointless,” she said. “It won’t work. He wants to divorce me. I’ve tried everything, but nothing changed his mind. He even has a mistress. She’s as pretty as I am, but younger…”

She had conveniently–perhaps subconsciously–left out her own faults. Edmund’s name never surfaced.

Unfortunately, her three former friends knew that part of the story all too well.

“See, I didn’t want to say anything before, but I think it’s time we do some soul–searching and reassess. He’s talented, powerful, handsome, and with a bright future. Why are you acting like it’s the end of the world if a man like that attracts other women and has affairs?”

“You’ll always be his lawful wife. So ignore the mistresses and accommodate him, for God’s sake! If you hadn’t thrown a fit, would he have wanted a divorce?”

Stan and Vernon spoke with impatience and disappointment, but Lena’s voice was the sharpest, cutting straight through like a blade. Her words sounded like an inquisition. “And what about you and Edmund? How are you any better?”

They stared at Hera. In their minds, standing with Sebastian would shield them from being blacklisted.

Hera could not believe what she was hearing. “What… the hell? How did you just change your tune? That’s not what you were saying moments ago!”

“Moments ago? Don’t twist things!”

“The truth is that you’re a woman. A woman should never show intimacy with a man who isn’t her partner. You know you were in the wrong, don’t you?”
