“Mr. Grimwald is sitting right next to me. He has something to say,” Jeanine finished.

“Mr. Grimwald?! Yes!”

The team instantly fell silent. Sebastian was more than the best employer in the world. He was a true business genius. Everyone had already begun to see him as the vehicle that could bring their personal dreams and ambitions to life.

“Is there anything you need us to do, sir? We are all ears!”

Jeanine handed her phone to Sebastian without a word. She prayed that whatever her employer was about to say would not hurt them too much.

Just as Jeanine had suspected, I had not called them to offer praise.

“Who ordered all of you to close this many deals in a single day?” I asked.

The team’s smiles froze. Anxiety pooled in their eyes.

“Sir? Don’t you… like it when we manage to secure this many contracts at once?” some asked after a few seconds.

Others began to guess what might be on my mind. Was Mr. Grimwald simply worried they had bitten off more than they could chew?

“Mr. Grimwald, you don’t have to worry about us taking on too much. We’ll make sure every project is handled properly. Worst case, we can always work overtime!”

“Exactly! Back when we were still under Baron Inc., we did the same thing! I practically considered myself checked into the office like it was a hotel!”

Jeanine could no longer contain herself. “Mr. Grimwald, everyone here is simply passionate about the company’s success. You know how capable we are. We won’t jeopardize any projects. Starting today, I’ll be working overtime as well!”

The team fell silent again, waiting for my response.

I regarded them with confusion. “The office is a place for work. It ain’t for y’all to conduct sleepovers!”

Morale plummeted.

Jeanine gritted her teeth. “That’s not what we meant. We only meant we’d even give up commute time to be more productiv-”

“What? No! That won’t do at all!” I cut her off, shaking my head.

It felt as though I had doused them with a bucket of freezing water. They had expected their passion and zeal to be recognized. They had even offered to work overtime.

Why would I oppose that? Could it be that I wasn’t the perfect employer they thought I was?
