“Anyone who wants to sit out of tonight’s entertainment can do so as well! Let me know, and I’ll repay you with bonuses and other benefits,” I finished.
“And before I forget. Please keep all your receipts from today. You can claim every one of them from the company, especially since you spent that money to bring in so many deals for Sleeping Giant!”
The video chat went silent. Jeanine was stunned. Everyone else was too.
A full minute passed before someone finally spoke. “Was that a joke, sir? Are you really… giving us all of that?”
“Of course I am! Look at the results you all achieved! There’s no way I’d walk back on my promise to the Greatest Team of All Time!” I replied with a smile. “Thank you for joining this ship with me. It’s truly my greatest honor to have you as colleagues and comrades.”
Silence again. Then, out of nowhere, a piercing cheer erupted through the call.
“You’re really the best employer I’ve ever had! You’re the G.O.A.T.!”
“I’m crying manly tears of happiness!”
“Suddenly, I wish I were a woman just so I could sleep with you and bear you a Sebastian Jr.!”
I froze. More than the women, the men had begun saying things that made my skin crawl.
“Piss off, boys! I’m straight as hell!” I shot back with a laugh.
We joked around a bit more before I ended the conference call. Afterward, I told Jeanine to tabulate the receipts the team had submitted and tally the number of participants for tonight’s excursion.
Jeanine kept avoiding Sebastian’s eyes, weighed down by shame. She had been scolding herself for thinking the worst of me.
‘After everything Mr. Grimwald did for you today, and this is the kind of man you thought he was?! How could you slander the greatest employer in the world?!‘
Her thoughts drifted further. ‘If Mr. Grimwald treats his employees like this… how does he treat his girlfriend, or even his wife? Wouldn’t he treat them like a goddess? Could I ever be lucky enough to catch his attention? To become his wife?‘
I waved a hand in front of Jeanine’s face. “Earth to Jeanine! Anybody home? You keep spacing out today. Are you fatigued? Maybe you should go home instead of partying with us. I’ll just reward you through bonuses.”
“No, I’m fine. I want to go to the party if you’re going!” she blurted, a little too eagerly.
“Er… yeah. Of course I’m going,” I said.
Jeanine blushed, realizing too late how suggestive she might have sounded. “Oh. Right. Then I’ll go too! I’m not tired at all. Um, I’ll start crunching the numbers now!”
1/2
Within ten minutes, she had finished processing the team’s expenses and counting who would attend the party.
“Huh. Everyone’s attending, Mr. Grimwald, Back at Baron Inc., almost nobody ever joined teambuilding events, and yet…” Jeanine muttered.
“I’m honored that you all value my company this much.” I chuckled. “I’ve already picked a place for us. Send the details to the group and get everyone there right away.”
“Got it.”
A sudden thought struck her. “Um, Mr. Grimwald, are you really sure about giving us all paid vacations? We just got the contracts signed. Even if we start recruiting tomorrow, it’ll take at least a week before we have any new hires. What happens if our partners ask about our progress?”
