Chapter 5
Jettson froze like a statue, his mind roaring in chaos.
“What did you say?”
It wasn’t until the person on the other end of the phone repeated it that he snapped back to reality.
He stumbled back in panic, trying to steady himself against the table next to him. His knuckles were shaking from how hard he was gripping it.
Melissa, who had just been lying on the hospital bed moments ago, suddenly sat up and asked worriedly, “Jett, what’s going on?”
It wasn’t until Melissa came over and touched him that Jettson finally got his head straight.
“Johns Hopkins Hospital called… Madilynn is dead…”
Melissa let out a laugh. “Oh, Jett–you’re still so easy to fool. This has got to be another one of Madilynn’s pranks. She probably hired someone to fake this.
“Don’t you remember how she scared us with ketchup yesterday? Madilynn loves putting on a show. Don’t take it too seriously.
“She’s definitely mad at you for ditching her halfway through to take care of me all night. She’s just throwing a tantrum because she wants you to swallow your pride and make up with her.
“It’s all my fault for being such a burden… I took the heart donor that was supposed to go to her. If only I weren’t such an issue…”
As she spoke, Melissa broke down in tears, looking completely heartbroken.
Jettson was immediately drawn in, his heart melting right away, and the panic on his face disappeared in a flash.
He gently wrapped his arm around her waist and comforted her softly. “Missy, don’t overthink it. I just want you to be okay.”
As soon as my parents, Henry Baughen and Maria Baughen, walked in and saw Melissa’s red, puffy eyes, they quickly asked what had happened.
Henry’s expression dropped, and he snapped angrily. “Madilynn, that jinx, has always cared more

“Lying wasn’t enough for her before. Now she’s using her life to threaten us? Honestly, I wish that jinx would just disappear already!”
Maria even cursed harshly. “A jinx is really a jinx! She’s about to have surgery and is still causing drama like this! She’ll never learn to behave! If I see her again next time, I’m going to give her a good slap!”
The label “jinx” had followed Madilynn her entire life.
In the year Melissa was born, Henry and Maria decided to invite a fortune–teller to read the futures of their two daughters.
The fortune–teller said that Madilynn would bring bad luck to the family and even called her a “jinx,” while Melissa was labeled as a “lucky charm.”
So Henry and Maria abandoned Madilynn in the countryside and only brought her back to the city when she turned ten.
Madilynn used to think that her parents still cared about her–that they would make up for all those lost years, shower her with love, and give her all the attention she missed out on.
But from the moment she came back to the Baughen’s residence, all she got was endless abuse
and insults.
If Melissa got sick, it was because Madilynn had “cursed” her.
If Melissa fell down the stairs, it was because Madilynn had “pushed” her on purpose.

Whenever something went wrong with Melissa, it was always Madilynn who got the blame.
Madilynn lived in the Baughen’s residence, feeling scared all the time, never really able to relax.
She was always watching her parents‘ expressions, worried that she might get a serious beating at any moment
Then Jettson promised her he would marry her
She thought this could finally be her way out of the Baughen family
But even Jettson ended up siding with Melissa.
Suddenly, Maria’s expression changed, and she smiled as she put Melissa’s hand in Jettson’s.

“Good thing you and Madilynn never actually got your marriage certificate! You and Missy are such a great match. Both talented and good–looking.
“And, you’ve even got a kid together! Just go get that marriage certificate tomorrow. It’ll help clear
up
those online rumors.”
Madilynn never found out before she died that her parents had known all along that the son she nearly gave everything up to give birth to was actually Melissa’s child. She had been completely kept in the dark.
She was the only one totally left in the dark.
A flicker of disgust flashed in Maria’s eyes. “As for that jinx, Madilynn, we can just send her back to the countryside after her surgery. She won’t dare cause any trouble anyway.
“If that doesn’t work, we’ll just send her to a mental hospital. Let her learn how to behave properly
there.”
Once, Jettson would have nodded in agreement without hesitation. But now, it felt like something was stuck in his chest, a weird and unexplainable panic bubbling up inside him.
