Listening to what they were saying, Jettson felt an icy chill run down his spine, making him feel cold all over.
They were both their biological daughters. How could they be so unfair?
Jettson frowned and couldn’t help but speak up, “Mom, Dad, Madilynn is your daughter too. There’s really no need to treat her like this, right? Even if she was just lying, wasn’t it all just to get our attention?
“All these years as her parents, you’ve never really looked at her properly. You’ve been ignoring her the whole time. She’s been dealing with everything on her own. Don’t you ever think she might be hurting?”
After he said that, there was a moment of silence in the room.
Jettson felt a strange restlessness in his chest, so he used the excuse of getting hot water for Melissa to step out of the room.
As he walked past another hospital room, he heard some noisy commotion inside.
He glanced over and saw that someone on the hospital bed was covered with a white cloth.
The doctor’s voice was full of concern. “She was supposed to have 7 more days left. What on earth did she go through that broke her, making it impossible for her to survive these last seven days?
“Where’s the patient’s family?”
The nurse looked a bit upset. “They still haven’t shown up. You wouldn’t believe it. I called them so many times before they finally picked up, and I even got yelled at pretty badly”
The doctor sighed and shook his head
Hearing this made Jettson suddenly think of Madilynn.
He felt a wave of regret wash over him for leaving Madilynn all alone in that highway tunnel.
He couldn’t bear to think about how heartbroken he would be if something happened to Madilynn.
He silently promised himself that he’d never make her sad again.

Chapter 6
He pulled out his phone and sent Madilynn a bunch of messages, but there was no reply.
He tried to reassure himself. Madilynn was resting right now.

With one last glance at the ward, he turned around and walked away without looking back.
Two days later, while Jettson was taking care of Melissa’s medical bills, he overheard some nurses chatting. “A girl in her twenties came in from the highway tunnel a couple of days ago. It’s such a shame that she couldn’t be saved. Dying at such a young age is just heartbreaking.”
“And that’s not even the worst part. The really sad thing is that it’s been three days now, and no one has come to pick up her body!”
Jettson froze right where he was.
