Chapter 8
“It’s true. Mrs. Ackrigg’s body is in the morgue at Johns Hopkins Hospital.”
Sweat poured down the assistant’s forehead, his lips trembling uncontrollably.
Maria’s legs just gave out, and she fainted.
Jettson went pale, his eyes hollow.

In the morgue at Johns Hopkins Hospital, there was a figure covered with a white sheet lying quietly in the middle of the room.
Henry and Maria rushed over like they were on fire, but stopped right next to the body.
After what felt like forever, Maria took a deep breath and slowly pulled back the white sheet.
As soon as she saw Madilynn’s face clearly, she let out a scream and crumpled to the floor.
She pounded on Henry’s chest, crying her heart out, “Our daughter… How could our Madilynn be gone?
“Madilynn… What are we going to do now that you’re not here anymore?”
Oliver rushed over, clutching Madilynn’s hand as he cried out, “Mom, please wake up! I promise I won’t be mean to you anymore, and I don’t want Melissa to be my mom. Just wake up, and I’ll take any punishment you give me. From now on, I’ll always listen to you!
“Mom, please wake up soon, okay?”
Sobs filled the mortuary one after another. It felt like everyone suddenly started caring about Madilynn overnight.
Henry clenched his fists and charged at Jettson, landing a hard punch.
“It’s all your fault! If you hadn’t left Madilynn in that tunnel, she wouldn’t have died! You killed her! You need to pay for this!”
Jettson just stood there in shock, not moving an inch.

“You must be a family member of the deceased? Here are Madilynn’s medical records and info about Melissa.
“A month ago, we found out that Madilynn had end–stage heart failure. We were all so happy when we heard she’d found a matching heart donor.
“But then you gave that donor heart to healthy Melissa instead of letting Madilynn have it–she suffered because of that!
“We didn’t agree to give the heart to Melissa back then. It was actually Madilynn who decided to give it up, even though she needed it. And it was all because you pressured her!
“Now that she’s gone, I’m done talking. You’d better take care of yourselves!”
With that said, the doctor stormed off angrily.
The shocking news made everyone freeze for a moment.
Once they all found out the truth, nobody could move. They just stood there in disbelief.
Then, the assistant walked in looking pale. “Mr. Ackrigg, you really need to check out these surveillance videos.”
As Jettson scrolled through the videos on his phone, his face darkened right away.
He saw Melissa setting up Madilynn again and again.
He watched Henry and Maria tormenting and abusing Madilynn over and over.
Then suddenly, the sound from the video cut off without warning.
Jettson felt like his heart had been ripped apart. It hurt so much he could barely catch his breath.
A wave of regret and guilt crashed over him like a tsunami, completely swallowing him whole in
