(REMI'S POV)
The hallway was instantly flooded by the loud, plaguing sounds of mocking laughter after my undoubtedly ungraceful fall.
No wonder they had been waiting, smiling the moment they saw me. They had set a trap which I stupidly walked into.
And now, I was on the floor, surrounded by a pool of clear goo, embarrassed to the core while their heartless bunch enjoyed my misery.
“Oops, forgot to place the sign, didn't we?” A low baritone hit my ears as his footsteps approached me. Almost immediately, the hall fell silent, everyone waiting to see what would unfold next.
Jax Gallagher, king of Ravenwood Academy, captain of the school’s unbeatable football team, most valued star student, extremely skilled warrior from a long lineage of powerful werewolves…. Our formidable Alpha's puissant son and heir to the leadership position of our prestigious pack.
The list of accolades went on and on along with the remarkable achievements he had established over the years. Simply breathtaking.
Burning red with embarrassment, I couldn't even look up even after he came to a halt right in front of me.
Just then, a slender and pale hand was extended in front of me. “Need a hand?”
I'm sure he was wearing one of his annoying smirks. After all, it was only him who could pull such a prank on me.
Slowly, I trailed my gaze up his long legs up to his carefully sculpted face which was set in an unrepentant expression, losing my breath for a moment.
Often, I wondered how the goddess could bless someone so horrid with the best of everything. Not even the slightest flaw existed on the magnificent creature standing over me.
“You're sick!” I finally gritted out.
Unsurprisingly, he laughed, his voice smoother than velvet. “Come on, Remi. Many girls will kill for the attention you're getting from me. Don't act like you don't enjoy it.”
And that was exactly the problem. Even Jax was not aware of the truth in his sarcastic statement.
I was only able to tolerate all this bullying because the supreme alpha and engineer of all the mayhem in my life was also my biggest crush.
That's true. I had or, more definitely, still have a huge crush on Jaxon Gallagher despite everything he had done to me. The unmarked range of my own emotions terrified me and many times I questioned my sanity.
How could I still want someone who did nothing but subject me to pain whenever he pleased? I wasn't masochistic, was I?
But then, this was Jax Gallagher. The insanely gorgeous work of art with a powerful background and a glorious future awaiting him. The very peak of every girl's dream, not just in our pack but across the werewolf realm.
A person like me would never have a chance with someone like him. I was nowhere near his standards for girls.
Besides, I always kept a low-key profile at school. I was almost non-existent. Until that time when I bumped into him during a training session two years ago.
Ever since that unfortunate accident, he picked an uncanny interest in me and now, my life was a pathetic mess.
Naturally, the whole league of his friends also got into the plan. In other words, I had over ninety percent of the school’s most relevant population making my life incredibly hectic.
They were all lapdogs, doing everything to please their king, Jaxon Gallagher.
'But you're the worst one of all. Even though he's humiliated you countless times and trampled on your dignity, you still have feelings for him,’ a stern voice gnawed at me.
Shame descended on me. I was so dumb and very pathetic, still going crazy over a demon. Even if he's already got a girlfriend in the malevolent form of Sophia Patel.
Angrily, I pushed his hand away. “I don't need your help and neither do I need your attention. Take all of it and shove it up your asshole!”
I shouldn't be speaking to him in this manner, especially because he was the Alpha's son but, at the moment, I did not care.
He merely watched me, displaying no form of emotion. However, the emptiness in his eyes should've alarmed me. But, I was more focused on trying to stand up without slipping and embarrassing myself a second time.
“Very well then,” his voice was a mere whisper. Rolling my eyes, I ignored him. But as soon as he snapped his fingers, I heard a shriek.
Quickly, I spun my head in time to watch one of his friends forcefully drag in a struggling female by her hair.
“Lianne?” My eyes widened in horror. One of the weakest wolves in the school, we had become friends after she assisted me in cleaning up myself last week after surviving one of Jax's brutal punishments.
Snapping a blazing gaze to Jax, I demanded outrightly, “Why do you have her? She's done nothing to you!”
At this, he chuckled. “So, this really is what it takes to have your attention, huh?”
Snapping his fingers again, she was forced to her knees. What the hell was he planning? I couldn't stop my heart from thumping as I pinned an anxious gaze on her teary face and the bastard behind her.
“Here's the thing, Rem,” Jax's voice caught my attention, “Sophia made a complaint to me this morning about your sudden change in behaviour…”
They weren't mates yet, they acted like some damned couple whose union was intricately crafted by the goddess herself.
Then again, I had to be logical. They made a perfect pair, Jax being the future Alpha and Sophia being the daughter of the Beta.
“And I've seen for myself how rebellious and disrespectful you've become. Unfortunately, I would not condone that.”
I raised my gaze, trying to grasp the meaning behind that statement. When two of his friends suddenly appeared beside Lianne with two buckets, I instantly read through their intentions.
Even without knowing what those buckets contained, I knew they were gonna be used malevolently.
“No! Please don't!” Without the slightest hesitation, I was already begging him. “Please don't drag her into this. I admit I was wrong and I'll do whatever you want, Jax. Whatever you and Sophia want! Just let Lianne go.”
