“Teagan, you’ve got some nerve–abandoning me to run off to Canada, and you’ve been playing around this long.”

“Summer break’s almost over if you don’t come back soon. Did you forget you promised to travel with me?”

Maybe because we hadn’t talked in so long, there was something cautious mixed into his complaining tone.

I still didn’t want to talk to him.

Just as I was about to hang up, Mrs. Blake took the phone from him.

“Teagan sweetie, are you having fun over there?”

“This kid Cas doesn’t tell me anything–I just found out you two had a fight.”

“Don’t hold it against him, when you get back I’ll make him apologize to you properly.”

“Oh, and Cas got his acceptance letter today, yours should be coming soon too. When are you planning to come back for your graduation party? I’ve prepared a surprise for you…”

Mrs. Blake had always been so good to me since I was little, like a real aunt.

I couldn’t bear to hang up on her, so I had to listen patiently to everything she said.

“Mrs. Blake, I’m not planning to have a graduation party. My parents are so busy, flying all over the world. Our relatives can just celebrate online.”

“I probably won’t be coming back anytime soon–I’ll likely just return right before school starts to go straight to orientation…”

Before I could finish, Caspian was back on the phone.

His breathing was heavy–I could feel his anger.

“Teagan, I’ve already swallowed my pride for you, how much longer are you gonna keep this up?”

“If you don’t come back, don’t blame me for going to New York without waiting for you.”

After delivering this cold threat, he waited a long time without hearing a satisfactory response, then asked:

After spacing out for a bit, I was planning to go for a walk when Mom video–called me.

Turns out my acceptance letter had arrived home too.

They were still worried.

“Did you fight with Cas? That’s no reason to impulsively pick somewhere so far away.”

“What if you regret it in a few days and want to find Cas? There’ll be nowhere to cry.”

“Yeah, being separated like this–that’s four years long–distance. You used to cry after half a month at Grandma’s house and beg to come home to find

The more I listened, the worse I felt. I decided to explain everything to them once and for all.

“Caspian has a girlfriend now. It wouldn’t be appropriate for me to stay so close to him.”

My parents looked at each other, silent for a long time, but finally agreed.

They just asked me to come back soon.
