Chapter 7
Caspian wore a well tailored suit, casually leaning against the fountain–his tall frame naturally created its own scenery.
Just one vacation had stripped away much of his boyishness, making him look exactly like I’d once imagined he would when he grew up.
My heart was a mess of emotions–the encounter I’d been avoiding for so long had come so suddenly.
Seeing me frozen, Mom quietly explained.
“Teagan, today is Caspian’s graduation party. We thought we’d just bring you straight here for dinner.”
Dad added too.
“Teagan, didn’t you say you didn’t want a graduation party?”
“That boy Caspian was so thoughtful–he specifically had his parents schedule it for the day you came back, like celebrating for both of you.”
Caspian seemed to sense something, casually turning his head just as our eyes met.
My heart suddenly skipped a beat.
Even though I’d mentally prepared myself in Canada for facing him when I returned, I still felt cowardly when the moment came.
Caspian reacted first.
Just as he was about to come toward us, Juniper suddenly appeared and linked her arm through his.
Juniper pulled him along as they came over to greet us with smiles.
“Teagan, you’re back! That’s wonderful, I finally get to officially meet you today.”
“I always saw you with Cas before, and even though I was in the next class over, I never had a chance to actually meet you–such a shame.”
She was being so polite, I couldn’t just ignore her.
I forced out a smile and nodded with a small “mm.”
Caspian’s expression looked somewhat unnatural.
He said awkwardly, “What’s so great about meeting her? She’s just a petty little brat who likes to throw tantrums. I thought she was hiding in Canada and never coming back.”
I didn’t respond–I didn’t know how to.
Juniper’s form–fitting silver evening gown sparkled with crystals, making her seem to glow all over, perfectly matching today’s Caspian.
I looked down at myself–white t–shirt, jeans, canvas shoes, hair still messy from just waking up, casual like I’d just made a quick trip to take out the
trash.
Mom suddenly remembered, leaning close to whisper in my ear:
“I prepared a dress for you, sweetie. You can just change in the dressing room later.”
I nodded, then shook my head.
No need–I wasn’t the main character anyway.
Chapter 7
Caspian kept staring at me with an unreadable expression.
Juniper’s gaze also swept back and forth between him and me.
The atmosphere suddenly turned strangely quiet.
Fortunately, a few more friends arrived just then, so Juniper immediately pulled Caspian over to greet them.
Acting completely like the hostess.
1 quickly seized the chance to pull Mom toward the banquet hall.
Caspian’s graduation party only invited close family and good friends, so there weren’t too many people.
All our mutual friends seemed shocked to see me appear..
I just smiled and greeted everyone, pretending I didn’t understand anything.
But everyone’s gossip–hungry stares were impossible to hide.
I’d only gone to the terrace for some air when I could hear several friends in the hallway cornering Caspian to probe for details.
“Didn’t you say Teagan was already done with you over the school queen thing? She couldn’t let go and came crawling back?”
Caspian gave a low, mocking laugh.
“She’s just being childish. She’ll get over it in a couple days. We’ve been together for so many years–how could she really bear to cut things off with
me?”
The guy sighed, “Actually Teagan’s pretty great too. After all those years of feelings between you two, the way she hangs on your every word–we’re all jealous.
“On one side you have your childhood friend of many years, on the other your dream girl crush. It’d be a shame to give up either one… So what are you planning to do going forward?”
