Chapter 10
“I swear, I will never contact her again. I’ve deleted all of her contact information.”
The light from outside fell on his nose.
I gently stroked his face.
“Austin.”
“I promise.”
In that moment, the distance between us felt
so foreign, so far.
I slapped him hard.
Austin, realizing what had happened, looked stunned.
Stella, on the other hand, was livid, her face twisted in fury, as though she wanted to tear me apart. “Gianna!”
Austin stepped in front of her, grabbing her arm and forcefully throwing her to the ground. “Leave.”
Stella ran out, crying, “You said you loved me most! How could you do this to me?!”
Austin closed his eyes.
After a long pause, he sighed, “Gianna, does it really have to be this cruel?”
I didn’t respond.

Chapter 10
The figure behind me had already drifted away.
As the door closed, his voice faded, distant and faint. “She’s still young. I’m worried she might do something drastic. I need to check on her.”
The moment the truth was revealed, it was unbearable.
When we bought the house, I mentioned I liked big bay windows so I could see the most
beautiful sunsets.
Austin spent a few extra thousand to get this place.
Now, in front of the bay window, I watched a man and a woman downstairs locked in a
kiss, reluctant to part.
The man was still wearing the custom–tailored suit I had bought him, holding the woman
tenderly as she cried and hit him in his arms.
A sharp pain stabbed at my heart.
The truth was, I wasn’t pregnant.
Austin thought we had done it.
But that night, he was so drunk.
The delay in my period wasn’t because of pregnancy–it was just my recent emotional low,
This child, was my best leverage to control him.
My mother had always told me,
“Foolish girl, how much is sincerity really worth? Those intangible things don’t hold a candle to money.”

“Mom, please, let me marry him. Sincerity is not some illusion. I believe that as long as we love each other, nothing is impossible!”
Two properties worth five million.
Transferred through overseas accounts.
As personal assets, Austin wouldn’t get a penny when we divorced.
I called my lawyer: “Proceed with the process. Help me secure the maximum benefit legally. Money? Of course, the more the better.”
The boomerang from years ago
was now hitting me square in the forehead.
Austin didn’t know any of this.
Just like how he had hidden his affair from me.
I suggested we visit my alma mater, and Austin agreed immediately, even saying that the
little one in my belly was lucky to get to visit the school with us.
At the school’s gate, the wisteria waterfall twisted around the small pavilion.
The young man brushed the girl’s hair behind her ear, the cicadas singing in the hot summer air, and all I could hear was the sound of a heartbeat–thump, thump, thump.
“I like you.”
Returning to this place,
everything had changed.
That “I like you” had been said a thousand times to Stella, somewhere, sometime, maybe through their shared music playlists, or in their bed.
