Hogan watched Yvan’s retreating back and turned to Monica. “See? That’s the wonderful son you raised!”

Monica was in no mood to argue. Instead, she voiced her concern. “Honey, do you think… our son being this old and never having dated… could he have some kind of problem? What if he’s gay?”

“What nonsense are you spouting?” Hogan scolded. “How could Yvan possibly be gay?”

“Why not? Don’t think it couldn't happen to us. I have a friend whose son is gay. He’s tall, handsome, well-built… they introduced him to so many girls, and he rejected them all. Later, he confessed he liked men.”

Monica’s words gave Hogan pause.

He pictured Yvan bringing a man home one day, saying, “Mom, Dad, this is my boyfriend.”

Hogan was taken aback for a moment. After giving it some thought, he realized he couldn’t entirely dismiss the possibility. He let out a deep sigh.

Monica glanced at him and said, “What’s with the sigh? I was just saying it offhand—nothing’s been confirmed yet.”

Hogan realized he had been impulsive. “You should probe a little,” he said to Monica. “See if he’s interested in men.”

“Patience. This needs a gentle approach,” Monica said, waving her hand. “I’ll try to sound him out over the next few days.”

Yvan rushed into his room, closed the door, and opened his chat with Dana.

She hadn't messaged him; she had simply accepted his request.

When she first saw the friend request from Yvan, she had been more shocked than pleased.

The request message said he had something to discuss with her.

In three years of high school, she had exchanged fewer than three sentences with Yvan, and that was only after her deskmate, Winifred, became his girlfriend. Before that, they had never interacted.

After graduating, Dana had gotten a teaching job in her hometown and now lived a quiet, ordinary life, almost completely disconnected from her past in Zion.
