Yvan was filled with regret.
Why did he say that? And why did Winifred have to overhear it?
No wonder she had broken up with him shortly after they got back.
At the time, he hadn't given it much thought, nor had he ever considered marrying Winifred. Marriage seemed like a distant concept to him back then.
So when his friends teased him, he just casually said, “I’m just playing around.”
Subconsciously, he was indeed “playing” with Winifred, but not in that kind of way.
“Winifred, that’s not what I meant.” Yvan’s explanation sounded weak and pathetic. “I just said it without thinking. It didn't mean I wasn't serious about you. I… I didn’t mean it like that.”
He didn't know how to articulate what he truly felt. Clearly, Winifred didn’t believe him.
“Don’t you dare say you like me again. It makes me sick to hear it.” Winifred’s face was etched with scorn. “Yvan, sometimes when I think about the past, I feel nothing but regret. Regret for ever knowing you, and even more regret for ever dating you. How much better my life would have been if I had never met you.”
Then she wouldn't have been hurt, wouldn't have gotten pregnant, wouldn't have had a miscarriage, and wouldn't have lost her grandmother that way.
Her grandmother was probably still worried about her, even in death.
Yvan’s heart ached hearing her words.
“Winifred, I’m sorry. I honestly didn’t mean to hurt you back then.”
Sorry? An apology seven years too late.
Winifred scoffed. “You don’t need to apologize to me. What’s past is past. I just hope that from now on, we can be strangers. I won’t look for you, and you won’t bother me. We’ll have nothing to do with each other.”
After saying her piece, she turned and walked away.
As for the pregnancy and the miscarriage, she didn’t want to tell him. That was a pain she kept buried deep inside.
