Responsibility?
Natalie’s wide, damp eyes were filled with astonishment.
"I'm the victim, and you want me to take responsibility for you?" She raised her hands, trying to push away the man looming over her.
But her slender arms had little strength.
Alexander didn't budge.
His lips curled into a smile. "Are you saying you didn't enjoy it?"
Last night, he'd had to exercise immense self-control, finally coaxing her to sleep before taking several cold showers himself, afraid her body couldn't take any more.
The blunt and audacious question made Natalie's face flush a deep red.
She pushed again, and this time Alexander didn't resist, letting her shove him to the side. He propped his head on his hand, seeming to enjoy her frustrated but helpless expression.
Natalie wrapped the blanket around herself, got out of bed, and scurried to find her clothes.
"There's a new set in the closet," Alexander's voice came from behind her.
Her own clothes were ruined. Natalie glanced into the closet and saw a new shopping bag.
Inside was a complete set of new clothes, from underwear to outerwear.
As angry as she was, he had saved her last night.
"Thank you," Natalie said before taking the clothes into the bathroom.
Once the door was closed, she let out a breath of relief. Looking in the mirror, she saw her pale skin was tinged with pink, and her chest was covered in a dense pattern of love bites.
Natalie frowned deeply, a troubled look creasing her brow.
This never should have happened…
Her phone started vibrating. After searching for a moment, she found it in the pocket of the pants she had worn the night before. She had managed to grab it to call for help, but Benjamin had dragged her back to the bed before she could.
The call was from Arianna Mitchell.
"Natalie, where are you? I'll come find you."
"I'm at a hotel. It's okay, don't worry."
She hadn't come home all night, so Arianna must have been looking everywhere for her. But from her tone, it sounded like she already knew Natalie was safe.
"Alexander Ramirez called me last night looking for you. That's when I realized you never met up with him. Natalie, where did you go? Mr. Thompson found out you were missing and had people searching for you, too."
Natalie didn't dare tell Arianna what had really happened, afraid of worrying her. She fabricated a story.
"I ran into Benjamin White, and we were talking about the auction. My phone must have been on silent, which is why I missed my meeting with Alexander. But we met up later. I had a little to drink, and it got late, so I just stayed at the hotel for the night."
The lie was full of holes, but it was all she could come up with.
The scene she'd witnessed at Sagebrush Community was still vivid in her mind.
Natalie shook her head. Even if Alexander was behind it, it was probably just his possessiveness. He didn't want anyone else touching what was once his.
She showered and changed into the new clothes.
They fit perfectly, and the simple style was just what she liked.
When she came out, Alexander was on the phone by the window.
"Once you find that man, you know what to do."
That man… Natalie thought of the repulsive man from the parking garage.
"Finished?"
As she was lost in thought, Alexander ended his call and turned to her.
Natalie nodded.
"Eat the soup, then we'll go to the hospital."
"I can go by myself."
Alexander scoffed. "Trying to run out on me the morning after?"
