I Refuse to Be Your Second Choice novel Chapter 209

In the car, Alexander Ramirez sat in silence, lost in his own thoughts.

“Mr. Ramirez, do you want me to arrange the test for Ms. White in advance?” Aaron Lee asked quietly. He had overheard the hospital director’s explanation earlier, but Alexander hadn’t said a word about it since leaving the office.

With his fingers laced together and his legs crossed, Alexander’s face was unreadable. After a while, he finally spoke. “There’s another month before it can be done. Let’s hold off for now.”

The earliest they could do the test was at eleven weeks. That meant he still had a month to think it over. The procedure wasn’t without risk, and he couldn’t just ignore that. No matter how much he wanted answers, he wasn’t willing to be completely reckless.

He closed his eyes, exhaustion settling over him.

“Mr. Ramirez, there’s something else. I just got some news,” Aaron said, watching him through the rearview mirror. “Keith Foster, the VP at Prestige Properties Group, died of a heart attack in prison.”

Keith Foster hadn’t had any heart problems before he went inside. Without even opening his eyes, Alexander asked, “Who did it?”

“I’ve already started looking into it. Foster didn’t have any enemies inside, and it happened suddenly during dinner. But there’s something odd. One of the kitchen staff, a chef, is a distant relative of Samuel’s assistant.”

“And right after Foster died, that chef quit and went back to his hometown.”

It was a subtle connection, easy to miss unless you dug deep. Everyone knew how Foster had ended up in prison. With no grudges inside, that chef looked suspicious. He probably wasn’t acting out of personal revenge. Someone else must’ve pulled the strings.

Alexander’s eyes opened, sharp and cold. He let out a low, mocking laugh. “Samuel Thompson really went all out for Natalie Watson.”

It was clear he was picking a fight.

“Should we tell the police what we found?” Aaron asked. Samuel Thompson and Alexander Ramirez had always been at odds, and this was the perfect chance to give Samuel a headache.

“Why do you think you were able to find all this?” Alexander said quietly, straightening his cuffs. “If Samuel Thompson left a trail for you, it means he’s got something else up his sleeve. Just telling the police won’t be enough to trip him up.”

The meeting was set for six in the evening. By the time it ended, it would probably be too late.

Samuel didn’t push. “No worries. It’s just a shame if you miss it.”

“Thanks for thinking of me. It’s just bad timing, I guess.”

Honestly, the meeting wasn’t the only reason she wanted to skip it. The gala would invite all the top bidders from the auction. Alexander Ramirez had been the biggest one, and she really didn’t want to run into him. Whether he showed up or not, she’d rather avoid the whole scene.

After hanging up, Natalie grabbed her coat and stepped out of the office. Right then, her phone buzzed with a new message.

[Don’t even think about skipping The Thompson Group gala.]
