Natalie found herself thinking about Steven Wright, the man she’d met not long ago. “Yeah, Arianna’s dating someone new,” she said, her voice casual.
Samuel was about to introduce her to some of the top names in the collector world when everyone’s attention shifted toward the entrance.
Natalie glanced over.
Standing in the grand doorway was Alexander Ramirez. He wore a perfectly tailored suit that fit him like it had been made just for him. The watch on his wrist was subtle but expensive, hinting at quiet wealth and the kind of confidence that didn’t need to shout.
His eyes, sharp and striking, moved across the room, looking for someone.
Next to him was Camila White in a white evening gown, holding onto his arm with a bright, practiced smile. The whole room knew they were about to get engaged. Tonight, she was here as the soon-to-be Mrs. Ramirez.
Camila tilted her chin up, giving everyone a look that said she was in charge.
Alexander’s eyes landed on someone and he started walking. Camila, clearly enjoying being the center of attention, hurried to keep up. When she saw where Alexander was headed, her smile faltered. Natalie Watson was right there, not far off. Just the sight of her made Camila’s blood boil. Natalie was everywhere, like she couldn’t be shaken off.
“Mr. Ramirez, thank you for joining us,” Samuel said, smiling as he reached out to shake Alexander’s hand.
Alexander glanced away from Natalie and, for once, actually shook Samuel’s hand. “With such a warm invitation, how could I say no?” he said smoothly.
Their handshake was a silent standoff, but both men looked perfectly polite.
“Mr. Ramirez, you bought Baby’s Breath at the auction. I’m surprised Ms. White isn’t wearing it tonight,” Samuel said, his tone playful.
Everyone thought Alexander had bought the crown for Camila, but only Camila and Alexander knew the truth.
Camila had ruined the crown herself, feeling a rush of satisfaction. Now, as Samuel brought it up, she saw a chance to embarrass Natalie in front of everyone.
“Mr. Thompson, actually—”
Now that all the important guests had arrived, the evening officially began. Someone came over to invite Samuel to the stage to make a speech. It was, after all, a thank-you event for the auction, and Samuel started off by expressing his gratitude to all the collectors and buyers, as well as Billy Firth for his partnership.
There was a round of polite applause. Alexander leaned in and said quietly, “I can’t sit through another minute. I’m going to get some air.”
Natalie kept her eyes ahead, ignoring him completely.
Camila heard and quickly offered, “I’ll go with you.”
“You just got out of the hospital. Better take it easy. Wouldn’t want you feeling unwell again,” Alexander replied coolly, then walked away without looking back.
Five minutes later, Natalie’s phone buzzed with a new message.
Come to the second-floor lounge.
