Camila White lounged on the sofa in the villa, a bowl of fruit balanced on her lap while she watched TV. Her mood was soaring. Ever since Alexander had backed her up at the restaurant and invited Natalie Watson to their engagement party, she’d felt like she could finally breathe. She’d pulled off the perfect move and, at last, she’d beaten Natalie.
It didn’t even matter that Alexander didn’t love her. Soon, she’d be Mrs. Ramirez, the one and only lady of the Ramirez Group.
Her phone buzzed beside her, making her frown. The maid was out buying groceries for her soup, which meant Camila had the place to herself. She picked up the phone and answered, her voice soft and sweet. “Eric.”
Just hearing that was enough to make Eric Bailey’s heart flutter.
“So, did Alexander Ramirez buy it?”
Camila stabbed a piece of apple with her fork, her grin smug. “Of course he did. Ms. Bell delivered the results herself. He didn’t have a choice.”
“That’s great. Don’t worry, no one’s going to find out. The guy who did the report is already out of Cabinda. No one will ever know a thing.”
She thought back to the day Alexander came back to the country. She’d called him, but he’d coldly hung up. Later, the Ramirez Estate called, asking them both to come home. Camila went to the Ramirez Group office to find him, but as she reached the door, she overheard Alexander telling Aaron Lee to set up a paternity test for the next day.
She’d panicked. She’d never imagined Alexander suspected anything and was secretly planning a DNA test. She couldn’t let him find out the baby wasn’t his.
She ducked into the stairwell to call Eric, begging him to fix it.
“There’s someone who can help,” Eric had promised. “Just go along with everything and act like you don’t know.”
There was a pause on the other end. After a while, Eric said quietly, “Okay. I’ll wait. Just take care of yourself and the baby.”
“I will, I will. Oh, the maid is at the door. I have to go.”
She hung up before he could say anything else, not willing to wait another second.
Across the street, Eric sat in his car. He’d seen both maids leave with his own eyes before he called. She’d lied to him. He wanted to call her back and demand answers, but he didn’t dare upset her, not with the baby on the way. In the end, he started his car and drove off, passing a black sedan as he left.
Back in the villa, Camila tossed her phone aside, her face scrunched in irritation. She was just about to focus on her show again when the doorbell rang.
