Camila’s words froze everyone in place. The security guards and Eric Bailey stopped what they were doing, tension thick in the air. The guards started to move in, but Natalie raised a hand, stopping them without a word.
Her voice was calm, eyes flickering back at Camila. “Camila, you’re not getting away.”
“Shut up.” Camila’s hand shook, the knife pressing harder against Natalie’s neck until a thin line of blood appeared. “You think you’ve won? I’m warning you, if I go down, you’re coming with me.”
Suddenly, rapid footsteps echoed down the hallway. Alexander Ramirez and Bruce Ward rushed in. Alexander took one look at the knife at Natalie’s throat and his expression turned cold, his eyes sharp and dangerous.
“Let her go.” His voice was low, steady, and left no room for argument.
For a moment, pain flickered across Camila’s face, then she laughed bitterly. “I should have known. All that kindness from you was just a show. You never got over Natalie, did you? Now that your old flame’s in danger, you finally show you care.”
Alexander’s gaze was icy. “Camila, don’t do this. You can still walk away from this.”
“Walk away?” Camila’s laugh rang out, wild and cracked. “Why should I? You know, I used to feel guilty about what I did to you. Not anymore. Not even a little.”
“You’re going to die soon anyway. Everything you own will be mine.”
Right now, Camila looked completely unhinged, her eyes wild with something dark.
“Is that really what you think?” Alexander said quietly.
Camila glared at him over Natalie’s shoulder, her eyes hard. “You’re right, a heart attack wouldn’t take you out so quickly. But with all those blood pressure meds you’re taking, and the grapefruit juice I’ve been giving you every day… well, your time’s almost up.”
She remembered every time she brought him that special juice, watching him drink it all. Grapefruit juice mixed with his medication was a deadly combination, and she’d made sure he got enough to be fatal. By now, the toxins in his body had to be enough to kill him. Soon, he’d be gone, and everything in his will would belong to her.
“No. That’s not possible.” Camila’s voice broke into a scream. “I saw you take your meds. I checked with the hospital. You have a heart problem.”
“It was all staged. I never took the pills. I spat them out every time.”
Which meant the grapefruit juice never had a chance to work.
Camila’s eyes filled with disbelief. But seeing Alexander standing there, steady and strong, something inside her snapped. “You lied to me!” she screamed.
Her anger exploded. The knife in her hand pressed down again, drawing another bright line of blood on Natalie’s neck.
“Natalie!” Alexander shouted, panic in his voice as blood welled up and ran down her skin.
