Good. Now I wouldn’t feel any guilt for what I had to do.
Steven’s dark eyes were locked on me, his refined features sharp and severe. He released my throat, his hand moving to grip my chin instead.
“She is under my protection. You know that, so you shouldn’t have touched her. Don’t push your luck. If I have to get involved, things will get ugly.”
“Horace’s leg is still being treated by my contacts. And I’m the one paying for your Uncle Julian’s hospital bills. If you touch Verna, think about what will happen to them.”
I stared at him in disbelief. Then, I raised my hand to slap him, but he caught my wrist mid-air.
His dark eyes narrowed. “You resort to violence when you can’t win an argument. Who taught you that bad habit?”
I wrenched my hand free, my breath coming in ragged gasps. “You’d use a sick man against me? Steven, are you even human?!”
“Is Verna not a sick patient? Does that mean you can just torment her as you please?”
“If you just agree to the divorce, she won’t have anything to do with this!”
“If you agree to delete the photos and not create a scandal, then Horace and your Uncle Julian will be fine.”
The room fell into a tense silence. I glared at Steven, and he stared back at me, the air crackling with unspoken hostility. Neither of us was willing to back down.
Steven’s handsome face was a mask of grim determination, his eyes cold.
“If you delete the photos and leave Verna out of this, I will give you access to the best cardiac surgeon. Just say the word, and he can schedule the surgery immediately. Weren’t you trying to get your Uncle Julian transferred? His condition is serious; he probably doesn’t have much time left. Think about it. Do you want to force me into a divorce, or do you want to find a doctor for your uncle?”
I stared into his eyes. How had I ever been so captivated by him in my past life? He was a monster, backing me into a corner with no way out.
My bright eyes began to well up with tears, and a self-deprecating smile touched my lips.
