Noah suddenly laughed. “Ms. Jones, I don’t need any of that, and I don’t need money. It’s true that I had ulterior motives when I took your case, but what I want is Rachel’s contact information. Not her work number, her personal one.”
Rachel?
I was surprised, and then immediately on guard. “What do you want it for?”
Noah replied, “Don’t be so hostile. It’s just a contact number. I can’t do any real harm with it.”
I thought about it and realized he was right. It was just a number. If Rachel wasn’t interested, she had plenty of ways to shut him down. I’d talk to her about it later.
I agreed, then asked, “So, you’re not taking my divorce case anymore?”
Noah’s voice was calm. “I don’t like to take on cases I can’t win. That was probably our only real shot. Unfortunately, your husband didn’t fall for it. Your family background is not strong enough, so you don’t have enough leverage. If you really want a divorce, you’ll probably have to find a way to get him to agree.”
“Forgive me for being blunt, but do you really not have any leverage over Steven? Since he cares so much about the woman in the photo, and you don’t care about being Mrs. Lancaster, why don’t you just convince her to take your place?”
After I hung up, I thought for a moment, then sent a message to Rachel, telling her about Noah’s request and my latest failure.
Rachel replied quickly, saying it was fine. Her personal number was only known to a few friends, so it was hard for anyone to get into her private life.
Then she typed another message.
“Steven is so shameless. So, what are you going to do now that the divorce is off?”
“Could it be that he really can’t bear to let you go?”
I replied quickly, “No way. He doesn’t like me. But this divorce is proving to be much harder than I thought. I’m giving up on getting any money from him. He’s a total cheapskate. Trying to negotiate a settlement will just drag this out. If I don’t ask for anything, I have a way to get a quick divorce.”
