Henry’s POV

Friday would finally be the dinner where we’d introduce our mothers. Samantha had organized everything, not even letting me handle the invitations. She was happy and excited about it. She went home early, and when I arrived, she was already looking beautiful, all dressed up and directing the table arrangements.
“My handsome, you’re here!” She happily came to greet me with a kiss.
“Hmm, I think I should start coming home after you just to get welcomed like this.” I hugged her and gave her another kiss that left her breathless.
“Maybe you should.” She said, trying to catch her breath after breaking our kiss. “But now go get ready, our families will be here soon.”
Very reluctantly, I let go of Samantha and went to take a shower. When I returned to the living room, Samantha was contentedly observing the set table, and I could smell something delicious coming from the kitchen.

“Wow, everything looks so beautiful!” I said, admiring the perfect job she had done setting the table.
“Do you think your mother will like it?”
“She’ll love it. And I don’t know why you’re so worried, my mom adores you.”
“But now it’s for real, we’re living together.”
“Repeat that, please?”
“That it’s for real?”
“The next part.”
“We’re living together.”
“Hmm, how I love hearing that!” I kissed her. I never thought I could love a woman like this, with this boundless love that only wants to be together and have certainty about the future. Making plans. It was more than I could imagine deserving.
“I love it too!” She smiled and kissed me, letting go when she heard the doorbell ring. “Ahhh, our first guests. Come!”
Samantha pulled me along to the front door. We opened it to find Hebe and her family. My sister hugged Samantha with genuine joy. Edward came in smiling, and my nephews were carrying backpacks. I didn’t understand why they had backpacks. Was Hebe planning to make them study after dinner?
“Henry, I thought this day would never come!” Edward patted my back. “I was getting tired of always having family gatherings at our house.” He was joking and let out a hearty laugh.
“I think Sam will end Hebe’s reign over Sunday lunches.” I smiled at him.
“Don’t you know yet?” Edward looked at me amused. “They’ve already made a deal one Sunday here, another there, and holidays split too, one here, one there. It was almost like a child custody agreement. I had so much fun watching them negotiate.
“And how come I didn’t know about this?” I looked at Samantha.
“You were working, my handsome!” Sam smiled and winked at me.
ト
“She’s got you wrapped around her finger,” Edward whispered in my ear. “Just like Hebe does with me. She’ll have you doing whatever she wants.”
Soon everyone was seated in the living room, and Samantha was serving drinks. The doorbell rang again, and Sam pulled me to answer it. This time it was her mother, Joaquin, and Vince.

They had barely stepped inside when the doorbell rang again. This ime it was my mother and… what was Dr. Molina doing here? I felt a surge of irritation; this was supposed to be a family diner. As if sensing my mood, Samantha walked past me, but not before giving me a pinch under my ribs that nearly inade me squeal like a girl. That hurt.
“Heidi! So glad you made it! Hi, Dr. Molina. Welcome.” Samantha was all smiles.
“Please, sweetie, just Alvaro!” The doctor said, greeting her with two quick kisses on the cheeks and handing her a gift.
“Welcome.” I greeted them and gave my mother a sideways glance, which she ignored, and I caught Samantha’s eyes shooting daggers at me.
We joined the others in the living room, and I was surprised to see at Alvaro already knew Samantha’s family. They greeted each other enthusiastically, and then I introduced my mother to Sam’s family.
“What a small world!” Alvaro began. “Heidi, Vincent is the star of my emergency room. The most promising doctor I have in the hospital.”
“Thank you, Dr. Molina, you’re too kind.“! Vincent had a broad smile from the compliment.
“It’s good to know where to go when I need a doctor.” My mother smiled with her enchanting manner.
“Pearl, I never imagined I’d already met your daughter. Such a beautiful young lady,” Alvaro was overflowing with friendliness and seemed very close to Sam’s family. He finally explained that Pearl and Joaquin were always at the hospital since they worked for a pharmaceutical and hospital supplies manufacturer.
Soon everyone was chatting animatedly, and you could hear laughter and clinking glasses throughout the house, our house. Suddenly Enzo stood up, all formal, and asked for everyone’s attention.
“I’d like to have your attention for a moment,” Enzo began speaking like an adult, I imagined he was going to make a toast, he’d seen his father do it millions of times. “I believe everyone is as curious as I am, no offense, Dr. Molina, I think you’re a really great guy, but I was surprised to see you arrive with grandma, after all this is a family dinner. Can you explain this, Grandma?” Enzo did what I wanted to do but was afraid of getting another pinch from Sam.
“Oh, of course, my grandson!” My mother rose elegantly and addressed everyone. “Family, although you all know Alvaro, I’d like to formally introduce him to you as my boyfriend.” She said it just like that, quick and direct.
Enzo turned as white as a wax figure, the same reaction I had when I found out. But my biggest surprise was Hebe. My sister stood up and went to our mother, very serious, looked into her eyes and finally spoke, “It’s about time, Mom! You deserve to be happy.” Hebe hugged our mother. It wasn’t the reaction I expected but she was right.
“Sam, your dinner gets better every time!” Ed laughed and raised his glass to Sam, who was laughing at me and Enzo.
“Well, Alvaro, you’re officially part of the family now,” I said, patting his shoulder. “If you mess with my mom, I’ll kill you!”
Everyone laughed, and peace was established with the family finally reunited and enjoying a moment of peace and joy. Samantha took photos, lots of photos, she was determined to put together an album with all the moments we would live throughout our lives. But the night was just beginning, and this peace could still be disturbed.
