My mother stared at me, not even glancing at Lexie when she delivered her ultimatum. Lexie stood frozen halfway up the stairs to the second floor, her expression shocked.

"Lexie, go pack your things. We'll sort this out with our mother when she's calmer," I said, keeping my eyes fixed on my mother.

An hour later, I left my parents' house with my siblings. My mother didn't even say goodbye to her daughter, but I knew she was just trying to pressure my sister. My mother was an expert at emotional blackmail and always managed to manipulate my sister.

"Flavian, now she hates me! What am I going to do?" Lexie was tearful in the car as we headed to the airport.

"Lexie, Mom doesn't hate you. It's like you don't know her at all. She's like a stubborn child who says these things to make everyone do what she wants. Haven't you seen how she acts with Dad?" I tried to console my sister.

"I don't understand why she wants me to marry that worthless guy," Lexie said, frustrated.

"About that, I think I can help you understand. I talked with Dad the other day, and he's worried about this marriage, but Mom made him promise to support her on this," Raul seemed to have an answer to our questions. "You know there's extreme loyalty between them - if one decides something, the other supports it even if they disagree."

"And why is Mom so interested in this marriage?" I really wanted to understand.

"Because William's mother is her friend and thinks getting her son married might change his life. She promised Mom that after the wedding, she'd keep him in line, especially since they'll be living with his parents. Then Mom convinced Dad that it would be good to ally with the Bridges family." It was the biggest absurdity I had ever heard.

"I'm not going to live with that woman! She's unbearable!" Lexie immediately forgot about the drama with our mother.

"Yes, she is. So you're going to stop crying and grow up. Go with Flavian and take control of your life, sister, because if that idiot William lays a finger on you, Flavian will have to arrest me, because I'll kill him." I was wrong - I thought my mother had the final word, but in this case, it was Raul who was making the decision.

Lexie wiped away her tears, took a deep breath, and looked at us through the rearview mirror.

"So that's it, I'm officially a runaway like Flavian now." She laughed and playfully slapped my arm. "You'll have to support me."

"What you're going to do is find a job," I grumbled, and they started laughing.

From the airport in Paradise Port, we went straight to pick up Manu from work. During the flight, I had explained to Lexie what was happening, and she was horrified. As much drama as our mother created, she had never laid a finger on any of us, and despite how stubborn she was being about this marriage. I did not believe she would bother dragging Lexie back home by her hair. On the way, my cell phone rang, and I answered through the car's system.

"Dad."

"Flavian, I just heard you're harboring a fugitive," my father seemed amused by the situation.

"Well, I said if she didn't want to get married, she wouldn't," I responded.

"I know you'll take care of her," my father sighed. "When you get tired, just send her back. You know your mother wasn't serious."

"Are you still going to insist on this marriage?"

"Yes, we are. And I will convince your sister that this is best for her and the family. But I'll let her cool off first. Let's say I'm considering this as her visiting you, and she'll be back soon." My father was very calm, even though I could hear my mother complaining in the background.

"Tell Mom to calm down. This shouldn't have gone this far, and it's her fault."

"Flavian, your mother is used to having things her way, that won't change. As for Lexie, she's just being rebellious."
