Patrick’s POV

I had been trying so hard to understand where things went wrong between Virginia and me. Lately, all I did was try to fix whatever had broken between us. And that was exactly the problem - I did not even know what the issue was. The only thing I knew was that she was constantly irritated and impatient. Everything seemed to bother and stress her out.

I was so overwhelmed by this that I had been working on autopilot. I had not even bothered to get to know my new assistant. Vaguely, I realized she reminded me of someone, but maybe it was just my imagination since I could not remember who. However, she seemed quite efficient. In the two days she had been here, it was as if she was not even around - I barely saw her, but the work was getting done, and I always found everything well organized on my desk.

Perhaps I should invite her to lunch and get to know her better, since she would be my right hand at the company. I liked to know well those who worked with me, and I really enjoyed having Rick as my assistant - he knew me well. But then Alexander asked me to let him have Rick, as he did not want to deal with a newcomer. I did not mind, but I would need to pay more attention to my new assistant. Then this woman arrived. I had not paid much attention, I could not even remember her name which I had only heard once, but I needed to learn more about my new employee, or I would have problems at work too.

I was about to get up and invite her to lunch when an employee from my house called to tell me that Virginia had packed her bags and collected all her things. An alarm went off inside me. I had not even hung up the phone when Alexander walked into my office.

"Patrick, why did Virginia resign?" Alexander was perplexed, but I was terrified.

"When I find out, I will let you know." I grabbed my car keys and rushed out. I needed to get home quickly. And I made it in record time.

There was a taxi parked on the sidewalk, and the driver was loading suitcases into the car. I looked at her as she handed the last suitcase to the driver, and when she saw me, she froze. She certainly did not want me to be there. I approached, feeling my heart being crushed in my chest.

"I am not even worthy of a goodbye?" I asked her calmly, not wanting to believe what she was doing.

"Patrick, do not make things more difficult than they already are." She looked at me with what seemed like pity in her expression.

"More difficult? No, Virginia, I am making things more dignified for you." I replied, keeping my voice low. "Let's go inside and talk."

"There's nothing to talk about, Patrick! I'm leaving." She seemed eager to get away from me.

"Really? Don't you think I at least deserve to know why? Was I that terrible to you?" I wanted to keep her there, wanted her to realize how good we were together, wanted her to feel what I was feeling. But none of that was possible; I knew nothing would change her mind.
