Clavin’s POV
I was riding through the plantation, thinking about my good fortune and the beautiful Manuela. Rita was worthless, trying to sell the girl. When she approached me proposing to marry Manuela to my son, I thought it would be a good solution - maybe he would settle down and stop wasting my money on parties and brothels around town. But when I saw that girl, I had no doubt - I would marry her myself. Now I was as anxious as a young boy. You know what, I was going to move this wedding up to tomorrow, Rita could throw all the tantrums she wanted.
I returned to town, but before reaching the notary's office, I ran into the detective. That puppet only did what his wife told him and what my money bought. It was good he was like that, since my son was always getting into trouble and I had my own messes to cover up, especially regarding the people I needed to get rid of.
"Calvin, I'm glad I found you," Detective Roger said.
"What is it now, Roger? I don't have time," I replied curtly.
"Calvin, you asked us to keep an eye on Rita's house and keep Cam away from there. Cam wasn't there, but there was a police officer staking out the front of the house," Roger spoke hastily.
"And why was one of your officers there? What's the problem?"
"The problem is it wasn't one of my officers. A team came from outside, a large team - they're watching you all," Roger said, and I grew concerned.
"What do you mean?"
"A detective from Paradise Port and another from this region. They're heading to that abandoned farm of yours. They're looking for Manuela Blanco."
"Damn! They can't get there, Roger. Figure something out, but get these cops out of town."
"Calvin..." I got in the car, needing to get to the farm quickly and get Manuela out of there. "Calvin!" I left Roger calling after me.
I drove to the farm as fast as I could, and when I arrived, I wanted to strangle Rita. She was beating Manuela, even though I had warned her not to do that. The girl was all bruised, her face hurt and swollen, almost deformed. How could I have a honeymoon now with the girl all beaten up and unable to do anything? She fainted when I arrived, and it's a good thing I got there because Rita would have killed her if she had continued beating her like that.
"What did you do, Rita?" I demanded, but Rita just looked at the girl on the floor with contempt.
I approached and checked. The girl was unconscious. I called my trusted henchman.
"Get her out of here now. Take her somewhere no one can find her. And get her some clothes." He picked her up in his arms, then I saw a torn paper on the floor and a folder, I gathered everything and handed it to him. "Listen carefully, don't you dare touch her! Or I'll kill you."
"Yes, boss." He replied, and I knew he would do as I ordered.
"Get out of here quickly, go through the back." I ordered and accompanied him outside. I watched him place Manuela in the back seat of the car, cover her with a sheet, and leave through the back of the property. I called the other two men guarding the house.
"If any of you breathe a word about her, you'll be a dead man. Am I clear?" They knew I followed through on my threats, and I knew they would not talk. I looked at them and turned around, going back inside the house, now I would have a little chat with Rita.
"Now for us two." I faced her. "I told you not to hit her, didn't I? So tell me, why? What did you do?"
