Juniper blinked at the snide comment but surprisingly, Inigo did not let go of her hand at all and waved at his son to push him closer to the table.

“Please excuse my father,” Fermín said apologetically. “They get to an age where something happens to their filters. They become so clogged up I’m sure they rip it out and are done with it.”

She giggled at his words despite her nerves, or maybe because of them, she wasn’t certain. Instead, she found herself with her laugh a bit more high–pitched than usual as she took her seat next to the older man and Abuela one seat down. As if sensing she needed him, Phineas took the seat Beni was in earlier, despite the man’s grunt of displeasure.

She rested her head on Phineas‘ shoulder, and he kissed the top of her head. She closed her eyes when she realized Fermín was going to be sitting right across the table from her.

“Tell me about yourself,” Inigo demanded gruffly.

“Dad!” Fermín hissed at him. “We are guests here. She is not Martina.”

“I know she is not Martina. Do you think Martina might have birthed a child we didn’t know about?” he looked her over.

“No.” She giggled, “I actually look quite a bit like my mama. We have the same hazel eyes, though mine are bit browner than hers, and the same chin and I inherited her curves for sure. We share clothing all the time.”

“What is her name?”

She flicked a glance at Phineas and shrugged carelessly, “I call her Mama, but the rest of the world calls her Maeve.” She pretended not to feel the way Inigo’s hand loosened off hers in surprise or the way Fermín stared at his father for a moment too long before turning back to her and clearing his throat.

“Her name is Maeve?”

“Yes.” She gave a smile at Abuela who suddenly decided this was the perfect time for food to start getting passed around the table.

“How old are you, Juniper?” Inigo asked with the tone of a man who was controlling himself tightly.

“Twenty–nine. I’ll be thirty this year. I’m hoping thirty is my best year yet,” she gave a grin to the three men who were all watching her carefully. “I feel like anything with a three in it might be my lucky number.”

Phineas chuckled as he put sliced and some other items on his plate.

“Dad, you can let go of Juniper’s hand. She needs to eat.” Fermín spoke with a laugh.

Juniper gave as smile as Inigo tightened his grip worriedly as if not wanting to let her go. “It’s okay. Most of my meals I share with Phineas, he feeds me anyway. He’s very protective and likes to make sure I am cared for.”

“What do you do?” Inigo asked her seemingly content to know he could hold her hand longer and not even balking at the fact a man was going to feed a woman at the table.

“I was working as an administrative assistant to the HR director at Phineas‘ company, but he fired me earlier tonight.”

Her thoughts were ruminating like fodder in my brain and tonight I let them spill out. Well, that and Phineas and Adil both told me their grandparents would not approve of our relationship and so I was on edge coming to meet Beni’s family,” she shot Abuelo and Abuela a smile. “Phineas likes to remove barriers for me and in this he fired me so I wouldn’t feel like a subordinate. If I want a job elsewhere I know he’d make sure I was given a good letter of recommendation.”

“You’re an incredibly intelligent woman,” Phineas said as he put an olive into her mouth. “I’d love for you to chase your dreams of education. If you want to go back to school, we can make it happen. We’ll all help.” He waved to Adil and Beni. “We have your back, sweetheart. Whatever you want.”

She smiled at him, “I’ll think about it.”
