Juniper turned just in time to see Fermín pop up out of nowhere and land a solid punch straight to Carl’s face, knocking him out cold.

Fermín shook his hand out, “fuck I’ve been wanting to do that for thirty years.”

She realized now, her father and mother, along with Beni were positioning themselves so she couldn’t see Kyst getting loaded onto the gurney where the paramedics were taking over from the security team.

“Is he still awake?”

“No. He’s passed out. The paramedics got an IV into him really fast. Our guys put compresses on his bullet wound. He’s going to make a full recovery Juniper. I promise.” Adil’s voice came from beyond her father. “Are you okay, Juniper?”

“No.” she whispered as she kept her face buried in Beni’s chest. “This was too much. I didn’t think we’d end up with bloodshed and violence. The entire Kennedy family is going to need medical attention. Kyst was shot. Lois is having some kind of cardiac event. Carl is definitely leaving here with a concussion because I heard the crack of Dad’s fist on his face and the way his head hit the carpet tile. This isn’t what I wanted. Juniper gave a sad smile and with Beni’s encouragement moved to join the man whose birthday they’d ruined. She took a seat next to him and let the older man take her by the hand.

“Do you know, Juniper, I think my wife would have liked you. She didn’t like many people. She would’ve liked you.”

“Really? I feel I’m bringing so much chaos to the Perez family with all my baggage, my exes, and my new family,” she shot a look at her father who was the epitome of snarkiness as he regarded Carl being tended to by two more people.

“You bring excitement and passion. A family can never have too many of those things. Also, my wife was one of those hippy dippy Woodstock goers. She made me crazy with her free love and shit, but I adored her. She would approve of my grandson being in this kind of relationship.”

“Do you?”

“Fifteen years ago, I would have lost my shit. I would have yelled, screamed, and threatened to disown him and remove 4/6 him from his position as CEO.” He reached for Juniper’s hand.

“Salute Granddad.” She tossed back the drink as she stared into the eyes of the old man. It hit her as soon as the liquor burned her throat, he was doing what the rest of the family were trying to do. He was distracting her from the scenes which were happening behind her. She leaned closer and kissed his cheek. “Thank you.”

“It is my absolute pleasure.” He patted her hand. “Now, do you think you could do me a favor?”
