Nobody is Sad Part II

“Maybe now is a good time to take your statement, Mr. Rojas,” the officer said curiously.

“My statement is simple, officer. My friend’s ex–wife snuck Mr. Kennedy into the party he was not invited to, and she was throwing around insults to make my fiancée feel bad about our relationship. As Mr. Kennedy started to weigh in, one of the invited party attendees pulled a weapon and shot Mr. Kennedy.”

“She was invited though, by Mr. Perez?”

“We invited several women who Mr. Kyst had duped. We were hoping that putting his past along with the fact Juniper knew of the women he’d been with front and center would make him wake up to the fact she was never coming back. We increased security just in case one of Mr. Kennedy’s affair partners tried to come for my fiancée. We take her security incredibly serious, and we bolstered the usual number of guards and processes, but the woman admitted in front of everyone that she brought her gun into the venue in pieces. I heard someone say her father was an inventor of some kind but

I’m not sure of the veracity of that statement. All I know

we considered the possibility someone would want to hurt Juniper, so we increased security and this woman found a way to bypass it and went for Kyst instead. I’m angry she was at risk, but I have zero fucks to give that Kyst Kennedy was hurt tonight. Do you need me to write that down?”

“Perhaps an abbreviated version,” the officer nodded quietly as if contemplating the words and then asked, “how did you know he’d be here?”

“We knew Denise was in contact with him. Our other partner, Adil Benton, is a PI. After Denise was arrested this week with a taser and violating the court order to restrict her from approaching Phineas or Juniper, we were no longer content with the police departments ability to keep her from getting near Phineas again.” An idiot could have heard the insult to the officer standing there and yet Beni continued as if unbothered, “Adil assigned one of his guys to watch Denise to make sure she doesn’t come near our partners. Denise met with Kyst Kennedy at a coffee shop earlier this week and said she could get him into the party. We realized quickly this was an opportunity for Juniper to end things once and for all with Kyst in a public forum with witnesses and for Juniper to point out how filthy the fucker is. We planned

his humiliation but not his attempted murder.”

“You wanted him to be humiliated?”

“I wanted him to see the ramifications of his behavior. He cheated on me. He ran an online scheme where he did a profile where he made illicit videos specific for women and convinced them to send him money. The lady who shot him said she was living in her car because she gave him everything.” Juniper said angrily. “He deserved to be exposed in public for the horrible behavior he engaged in. I expected some women to give him shit, video him and post it online and maybe make him trend for a couple of days. I didn’t think anyone would shoot him.”

“But you had extra security in place.”

“We put extra security in place for Juniper, not for Kyst.” Beni repeated. “Juniper recently found out she is the heiress to Fermín Aguado.” Beni waved to the man who was standing shoulder to shoulder with Phineas and Adil, watching the exchange and they were all clearly plotting something. “He is quite protective of the daughter he only recently found out he fathered. Additionally, with the violence Kyst has been showing lately and Denise’s anhinged behavior, we needed to, as I said before, bolster

security for her. It never once occurred to us Kyst would be at risk of physical harm given that most of the altercations we’ve seen with him, he’s been the

perpetrator.”

Phineas approached with a swagger in his step, “hey, are we almost done here?”

“Why?” Juniper eyed him cautiously.

“We have a full evening planned. We’re going to give Heloise exactly what she asked for and by the time we’re done that, Fermín’s contact should be ready with our marriage license. He said he’d have it ready in a few hours. We’ll be getting married, sweetheart.”

“Are you serious?” she eyed him in disbelief.

“Yeah. I already sent Janice to get your wedding dress. It was in the bunch of gowns I sent for you. You didn’t even look at it for tonight’s ball, but I know it’ll be perfect.”

“You’re insane,” she shook her head at his serious expression. “Phineas.”

with you. There’s no point in changing it to Aguado only for a couple of weeks. We can move everything up to now. You’re divorced. I’m divorced. We’re getting married.”

“Yeah, I’m not quite sure I’m on board yet.” She made a face at Phineas.

“Why not? All of our family is here.”

“Except Inigo and Anna. My grandparents. I want them here.”

Phineas made a face, “well, that’s,” he shoved his hands in his pockets, pouting and rocking on his heels. “I forgot about them.”

“We could video them in.”

“It’s not the same.”

“Let’s table this for a couple of hours. I’m sure we can work something out. First we need to get drunk Heloise under control, and my mother and Ximena are confident the only way to reign her in once she had her mind set is to give her what she wants.”

“Yeah, because it’s what they want too!” Juniper shook

her head.

Phineas looked at the officer, “you have her statement and the statement of our families now. Can we go?”

“It’s your party,” the officer grunted.

“Excellent. We have a hospital waiting room to crash,” Phineas whispered in Juniper’s ear as he tugged her close. “We also need to get Fermín to call his father and figure out how to make it happen. I’m suddenly really excited about your name change.”

Juniper wondered if this night could get any more
