Amelia stepped into the room and spotted Mr. Baker sitting up in bed, his gaze filled with warmth as Jinx handed him a glass of water. But even that kindness couldn't hide the deep sadness in his eyes.
“Grandpa Baker,” Amelia called softly.
Mr. Baker looked up and gave her a small nod. He looked so much older than the last time she'd seen him. At his birthday not long ago, he'd been so full of energy, commanding the whole room. Now, he just looked tired and fragile, like all the life had been drained out of him.
“Ruby, Grandpa wants some chicken congee. Could you wait in the kitchen for it? Help the butler bring it up when it’s ready,” he said gently.
“Okay.” Jinx’s reply was bright and clear. As she walked past Amelia, she gave her hand a gentle squeeze.
Amelia understood—Jinx was asking her to look after Grandpa Baker. Amelia smiled, ruffling the girl’s hair in reassurance.
When Jinx left, Amelia took a seat by the bed.
Mr. Baker gave a quiet cough. “Jinx’s old name didn’t suit her, so I changed it. From now on, she’s Ruby. She’ll keep her last name, but she’s the Baker family’s precious Ruby now.”
Amelia’s heart softened. She’d never expected the Baker family to care so much for an orphaned girl.
“Ruby’s a lucky child,” Amelia said softly. “Don’t worry, Grandpa. Felix will be okay.”
Just hearing Felix’s name seemed to crack Mr. Baker’s composure. Tears welled up in his eyes as he wiped at them with a trembling hand. “That foolish boy... He’s too proud. When the mission was over, he should have pulled out. But then the special ops team sent to rescue hostages went missing, and he went back to look for them. That island's near another one that just had an outbreak of some new virus. Customs is on high alert...”
“Grandpa, Felix isn’t just anyone. He’s made it through so many missions before,” Amelia said firmly. “He’ll come back this time too. I know it.”
Mr. Baker closed his eyes, weighed down by worry.
“Every time he leaves, I brace myself for the worst. I know he might not come back, but I’m getting old. I don’t think I can handle losing my grandson...”
“Grandpa Baker!” Amelia cut him off. “Felix will come back. Let me check your pulse, okay? You need to take care of yourself and be here with Ruby when he returns.”
She took his hand, focusing as she checked his pulse.
Mr. Baker watched her and managed a wistful smile. If Felix hadn’t left for that mission all those years ago, Amelia might have become part of this family... Maybe it wasn’t too late after all.
“Amelia, once Felix comes home safe, you have to come over for dinner. We’ll celebrate and welcome him back.”
“Absolutely,” Amelia promised without a second thought. “I wouldn’t miss it.”
She finished checking his pulse, did some acupuncture, and wrote a prescription for the butler to fill.
