The next morning, Larissa had just woken up and was heading downstairs for breakfast when she heard a commotion outside.

“Sapphira, we’re family! Why are you treating us like thieves? It’s not right! Kiernan would be so disappointed to see this. Families should live in harmony!”

Just then, the housekeeper, Wren, emerged from the kitchen with a breakfast tray. “Good morning, Miss Larissa,” she explained. “Mrs. Vivica is here with Mr. Leopold and Miss Honora. She says they’ve come to apologize.”

Larissa walked to the front door and saw them standing at the main gate of the courtyard. Her beautiful new mother, Sapphira, was blocking their entry. Leopold looked like he’d rather be anywhere else, while Honora appeared meek and troubled. Only Vivica was practically vibrating with agitation.

Larissa let out a short, cynical laugh. They were pretending this was about an apology for Leopold’s behavior, but their real goal was obvious: they wanted her back.

Sapphira’s face was a mask of cold fury. “Are you really here to have Leopold apologize? I think you have an ulterior motive.”

“Your words are getting uglier by the day,” Vivica retorted. “What ulterior motive? Is a mother visiting her own daughter an ulterior motive now? I think you’re the one with ulterior motives. You just want to hoard my daughter for yourself, so you’re deliberately keeping me from seeing her!”

Sapphira’s expression grew even colder, her voice laced with steel. “What do you mean, ‘hoard’? Larissa is my daughter now. Her name is legally registered with Neville’s and mine on our official documents!”

“Just because your names are on the same piece of paper doesn’t make her your daughter!” Vivica shot back, twisting the knife. “The blood of Paxton and me flows in her veins. That’s a bond you could never understand.”

Hearing this, Larissa’s eyes darkened. In her heart, Sapphira was her mother, and she wouldn’t let anyone hurt her.

Just then, Vivica spotted Larissa standing in the doorway of the villa. She immediately waved with theatrical enthusiasm. “Larissa! Mom is here with Leopold to apologize for what happened with the evening gown last night!”
