“I made you some herbal pigeon soup. It’s good for restoring your strength.”

Violet’s eyes lit up as she smiled. “You always take the best care of me, Mogan. Thank you!”

After dinner, Mogan still had work to finish. Once he’d cleaned up the kitchen, he took the trash downstairs.

He didn’t leave right away. Instead, he lingered beneath a tree, lit a cigarette, and stood in the cool night air.

He couldn’t quite put his feelings into words. Violet had said the pastries were spoiled, but he’d smelled them, even taken a bite—nothing seemed off.

Mogan stood there for a long time, letting the breeze wash over him, until finally he stubbed out his cigarette, got back in his car, and drove away.

Amelia worked late at the research institute, not leaving until nine.

By then, dinner had half-digested, leaving her stomach in that odd state—she wasn’t really hungry, just craving something sweet.

So she drove to her favorite bakery.

The owner, of course, recognized her right away, looking at Amelia as if she were a walking bundle of cash. He rushed to box up two of the freshest batches of pastries for her, refusing to take her money.

Amelia was confused and tried to insist, but in the end, she gave in and paid by scanning the code.

When she stepped outside, the scent of warm pastry still hung in the air. The craving hit her full force. She couldn’t wait until she got to her car—she popped open a box right there on the sidewalk, took one out, and bit in.

After wanting it all evening, the taste was pure bliss. Amelia closed her eyes, savoring the moment like a cat with a bite of fresh tuna—content and utterly satisfied.

Unbeknownst to her, a pair of eyes from a car parked under a nearby tree watched her through the darkness.

She got into her car, but didn’t start the engine right away. She indulged in two more pastries before pulling away.

Just then, her supervisor called. In a concerned tone, the director explained that things had been hectic at the institute lately, and once the rush was over, she’d be given some time off. He also mentioned the upcoming Aerospace Technology Expo.

The expo was a big deal, hosted jointly by the government and the Ministry of Defense, and held in Silkwood.
