"Only someone with no sense of decency would say something so shameless—the way you just did."
Daniel grabbed Robert by the collar. "We’re legally married, recognized by the law. An affair is still an affair, no matter how you try to dress it up. What gives you the right to act so self-righteous?"
Robert’s glasses slipped askew, but he calmly straightened them, not the least bit flustered. He managed a polite smile. "So Mr. Campbell, you do know the truth. Then tell me, how did you let someone like me slip in three years ago? Why did Amelia have to end up so hopeless that she left?"
Daniel froze, his hand slackening.
"Everything you’re feeling right now—did you ever wonder how many times Amelia went through the same thing three years ago? Why does it eat you alive when it happens to you, but when it was Amelia suffering, you barely seemed to care?"
Robert pushed Daniel away and smoothed out his collar. "You’re really one for double standards, Mr. Campbell."
It was as if Daniel had been struck hard in the chest. For a few seconds, he just stood there, stunned, the pain radiating straight to his heart. Had Amelia suffered all of this?
Robert poured himself another drink. Maybe he’d had too much already, because words he’d never normally say were spilling out. "Don’t make your pain out to be so monumental. Compared to what Amelia went through, yours barely scratches the surface. Did anyone force you to the point of insisting on a divorce? No. Were you pressured to leave Silkwood? Again, no."
"When I met her, you have no idea what state she was in. She smiled all the time, but there wasn’t a trace of truth in it. She buried herself in her studies and work, never letting herself rest. The moment she stopped, she’d just sit there, staring into space with those hollow eyes. It was heartbreaking to watch."
"Daniel," Robert took a deep breath, "she was broken because of you. You weren’t even there for her during her lowest days. The more you cling to her now, the more you’re draining her. Haven’t things gone far enough? Why can’t you just end this marriage with a little dignity, Daniel? Let her go—give her a chance at a real life."

How come in every novel I read on here the women don’t tell the men they are the father of their child? I find this ridiculous....
