Daniel’s gaze lingered on her, intense even across the room.
His eyes were deep—almost soulful—and now that he’d been drinking, they smoldered with something wild. Honestly, if he looked at a stray dog that way, it’d probably want to have his puppies.
Amelia looked away, uncomfortable.
Robert adjusted his glasses and quickly slipped back into his calm, refined persona, as if he hadn’t just been yelling at Daniel a moment ago.
But Daniel kept staring at Amelia, his eyes practically glued to her.
“Do you want another drink?” she asked, unnerved by his stare. “If not, let’s head home.”
“Yeah.” Daniel’s voice was rough and low. He sniffed like a sulky kid. “Let’s finish up before we go.”
The rest of the night, the atmosphere shifted—almost peaceful.
Amelia had no idea what the two of them talked about while she’d stepped out for ten minutes, but by the time she returned, neither of them said a word to each other. They just sat side by side, drinking in silence, glass after glass.
It was like watching two worn-out middle-aged men find some kind of kindred spirit in their misery. They’d poured their hearts out, and now they sat quietly, drinking together—melancholy, but somehow close.
Amelia almost felt bad interrupting their mutual wallowing.
So she didn’t. And by the end, she found herself with one man slumped on her left, the other on her right—both dead to the world.
Her head throbbed. She called the server to help haul the two drunks outside and into a car, then ordered a ride home, settling into the passenger seat.
Glancing back, she saw both men sprawled across the backseat, and wondered what she’d done in a past life to deserve this—working all day and now babysitting two wasted idiots.
Robert’s place was closer, so the driver dropped him off first. Amelia got out to make sure he got inside, then slid into the backseat and nudged Daniel, who was still out cold.

The readers' comments on the novel: Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel)
How come in every novel I read on here the women don’t tell the men they are the father of their child? I find this ridiculous....
