“Stop staring at it.” Ashley moved to throw the thing away. “Whoever the miserable bastard was that sent this—may they rot in hell. Only a soulless creep would do something like this.”
Amelia stopped her. “Don’t toss it yet. Call the police first.”
By the time the officers arrived, Ruby had dozed off. The police snapped some photos and took down their statements, then left with the usual, “We’ll be in touch if anything comes up.”
Cases like this—no real harm done, just a scare—happened every day, really. The cops opened a file, went through the motions, but rarely threw any real resources behind it. If they solved it, great. If not, it’d just fade away, one of a hundred unsolved scares.
Whoever had the nerve to bring this to their door probably knew exactly how to avoid getting caught. The odds of finding them were almost zero.
Leaning against the door, Amelia called Daniel. Her voice was cold, clipped: “Get over here.”
Daniel arched his brow, double-checking the number on his phone to make sure he’d heard right. “It’s the middle of the night. You sure you want me to come over?”
“If you’re not here in five minutes, don’t bother ever showing up again.”
Daniel gave a roguish laugh. “So the night finally brings out your true feelings. Can’t resist my charm, huh?”
Amelia wasn’t in the mood for jokes. “Your five minutes start now.”
Daniel lived in the next building. He’d been staying at Elm Estates lately to keep close tabs on things. Three minutes later, he was at the door.
He looked like he’d just been about to shower—black shirt half-unbuttoned, chest muscles showing through in the hallway’s dim light.
Showing up half-dressed at this hour? Real subtle.
But Amelia was immune to his games. She didn’t even glance his way, just jerked her chin towards the box on the floor before turning her face aside. “See for yourself.”
Daniel strode over, nudged the half-open lid with his black dress shoe. Whatever swagger he’d had was gone in a heartbeat—his eyes darkened, jaw set.

The readers' comments on the novel: Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel)
How come in every novel I read on here the women don’t tell the men they are the father of their child? I find this ridiculous....
