Amelia spent her first night in the Campbell family’s old house with a touch of wariness. After all, Daniel had free rein of the place—who knew when he might appear?

Thankfully, a certain troublesome dog—metaphorical or otherwise—didn’t make an appearance.

The next morning, as Amelia headed to Ruby’s room to wake her, she discovered the little girl was already up and about.

Downstairs, the dining room was alive with laughter. Bunny must have told some joke; both Grandpa and Grandma were doubled over, the whole room echoing with their joy.

Mr. Ethan Campbell, still chuckling, couldn’t help but sigh, “If only Ruby were Daniel’s child.”

He spoke quietly, almost to himself, but Grandma Edith’s sharp ears caught it. She fixed him with a look and declared, “How many times do I have to say it? Ruby is Daniel’s biological daughter!”

Mr. Ethan Campbell soothed her, “Alright, alright, if you say she is, then she is.”

“You still don’t believe me. Just wait—one day you’ll be proven wrong.” Grandma Edith pursed her lips, then added for dramatic effect, “I’ll say it now—if Ruby isn’t Daniel’s daughter, I’ll hang myself from the rafters in front of everyone. And you—you’ll hang right alongside me.”

Mr. Ethan Campbell’s mouth twitched at that.

“Seriously, it’s way too early for you two to be flirting with each other in front of us,” a lazy voice broke in.

Mr. Ethan Campbell glared at the man sauntering into the dining room, dressed impeccably as always. “Which part of that sounded like flirting to you?”

“You know—‘If we can’t be born together, at least let us die together.’ That’s next-level romance. You two are ready to share a coffin.”

“Coffins, first thing in the morning? Trying to jinx us?” Mr. Ethan Campbell grumbled. “What wind blew you in today, you troublemaker?”

“The wind of longing,” Daniel replied, drawing out his words with a theatrical flourish.
