Mogan’s expression was unreadable as he gently brushed her hand aside. “It’s nothing. Get some rest—I’m going to step out for a cigarette.”
He stood in the hallway, smoke drifting lazily around his face, eyes lost in thought. His mind wandered back over a decade, to the memory of a beaming little girl with a high ponytail. In the sunlight, her smile seemed to outshine everything around her. She deserved the very best the world had to offer—endless love and kindness. But somewhere along the way, that beloved little girl had become someone else entirely.
Mogan had devoted himself to Violet without ever expecting anything in return. Yet, after all these years, she’d never shown him a moment of genuine care; her attention was always on Daniel.
He wasn’t jealous. He just wondered—after so long, didn’t he at least deserve a word of concern, even as a friend?
Since she’d come back, she’d done nothing but complain about her own fears and hardships, never once asking how he was doing, if he was alright. In the end, she’d even accused him of being bewitched by some temptress.
Maybe she hadn’t meant anything by it, but the words still stung.
He didn’t regret what he’d given; after all, Rose Scott had saved his life—he owed everything to her, even his existence. But in moments like these, the weight of it all became exhausting.

That evening, Grandma Edith made her usual progress check.
Amelia shot her a mischievous wink, as if to say everything was going smoothly, but then hesitated. “Grandma, are you sure this… is really okay?”
“It’s more than okay,” Grandma Edith replied, her tone sharp as ever. “If it were up to me, I’d mix a little paint and cow dung into the melodrama—make it stink so bad they’d never wash it off.”
Amelia pressed her lips together to hide a laugh. No wonder Daniel had such a ruthless streak—it clearly ran in the Campbell family.
After their chat, Grandma Edith retired to her room and called Daniel.

How come in every novel I read on here the women don’t tell the men they are the father of their child? I find this ridiculous....
