Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 408

In the quiet hush of the private hospital room, Daniel stood by the tall windows, one hand tucked in his pocket as he looked out into the night. Without turning, he addressed the man behind him. “What’s the situation?”

Cedric had just ended a call. “Mogan boarded a fishing boat. Twenty minutes later, he tossed a cement barrel overboard. It went straight to the bottom.”

Daniel kept his gaze on the heavy darkness outside, his voice colder than the midnight air. “Leak the news to the Brown family in Elm City.”

Cedric nodded and turned to leave. As he reached for the door, he froze. “...Mrs. Campbell.”

Daniel stiffened too.

Amelia entered, loose hospital gown draping her slender frame. “Would you mind shutting the door?”

Her tone was calm—so calm, it was unnatural.

Cedric gave Daniel a sympathetic glance before quietly closing the door behind him. Hang in there, Daniel, you’ve got this.

Amelia crossed the room, stopping in front of Daniel, her eyes meeting his.

In an instant, Daniel’s expression shifted; he forced a casual grin and reached out to pinch her cheek. “Shouldn’t you be getting your beauty sleep? It’s what, three in the morning? What are you doing wandering around—missed your husband?”

She just looked at him, her silence draining the mischief from his smile.

He tried again, half-joking, half-defensive. “Why are you staring at me like that? It’s the middle of the night—you’re kind of creeping me out.”

Amelia’s voice was still husky with sleep. “I’ll ask a question. You answer it. One for one.”

Daniel’s eyelid twitched.

Amelia was sharp. She always knew more than she let on—she simply chose not to get involved.

“The security team showed up awfully fast. That’s because they were already nearby, waiting, weren’t they?”

Daniel dropped his eyes to hers, not bothering to lie. “Yes.”

She pressed on. “You’ve been tracking Samuel all along. He thought he had the upper hand, but you were just playing along, setting him up.”

Daniel hesitated, then nodded. “Yes. I’m not omniscient, though. I didn’t know he was out of jail until you mentioned someone sent flowers to the research institute. I followed that lead.”

Amelia gave a half-smile. “Impressive. No wonder you’re the one running the Campbell Group.”

They stood in silence, eyes locked, the tension thick. Finally, Daniel softened. “Sweetheart, don’t overthink this. Others might be pawns, but not you. Everything I do is for you.”

Of course. For her.

By getting rid of Samuel through Mogan, and then leveraging that to control Mogan—she would be safe.

Chapter 408 3

Amelia said quietly, “Alright. I’m going to bed.”

Daniel watched her retreat, a sudden, inexplicable anxiety rising in his chest. He followed her a few steps. “Want me to stay with you?”

Her answer was the door closing firmly in his face.

……

Just as dawn was breaking, Amelia had already packed her things and sat at the edge of the bed, waiting for Ruby to wake.
