Daniel wasn’t alone in the elevator. A small crowd watched, amused, as he shamelessly flirted with the stunning woman beside him.

Amelia, of course, had no intention of flirting back—she just couldn’t control the blush that spread across her cheeks thanks to Daniel’s loaded remarks. The man was incorrigible.

Thankfully, the elevator doors closed just in time. Amelia turned and hurried out toward the stairwell, desperate to put some distance between them.

“What brings you to the hospital?” Daniel called after her.

She ignored him, quickening her pace.

He followed her like a persistent shadow. Finally, in the stairwell, Amelia spun around, exasperated. “What about you, Daniel? Here for a men’s health checkup?”

Daniel looked travel-worn, his shirt collar undone, exuding effortless charm. He’d come to visit a business associate who was recovering upstairs. Since he’d just landed, he figured he might as well drop by.

But her jab didn’t bother him. Instead, he flicked her gently on the forehead. “You’re always wishing your husband’s not up to par, but if I weren’t, wouldn’t that be your loss? I asked first. Answer me, and then I’ll tell you if I’m here for a men’s clinic.”

Amelia turned and kicked him in the shin. While he was distracted, rubbing his leg, she strode out of the stairwell. Just as she reached the hallway, an elevator opened. She darted inside and quickly hit the close button.

Meanwhile, at the hospital entrance, Ashley realized she’d forgotten her phone and headed back inside, running into Amelia on the first floor.

Amelia handed her the car keys. “Ashley, wasn’t Daniel supposed to be back tomorrow?”

Ashley blinked in surprise. “Yeah… Wait, has he come home already? Did he call you?”

If only Daniel had bothered to let anyone know. But with Amelia, he’d long since earned a permanent spot on her blocked list.

Ashley didn’t look like she was hiding anything, so Amelia figured Daniel must have cut his trip short without telling anyone. She shook her head, resigned.

Amelia found a quiet corner on the ground floor and sat there for over half an hour, waiting things out.

Surely by now, the one here for his “men’s checkup” had left.

But when Amelia returned to the hospital room and opened the door, she stopped short.

Amelia felt a wave of relief. Apparently, Daniel had already asked around, and it didn’t seem like his mind had wandered to other conclusions.

“You’re not a doctor. What’s the point in telling you?”

Daniel turned to Ruby, feigning outrage. “Did you hear that, Ruby? Your mom’s always giving me a hard time. Not a kind word in sight.”

“If you can’t take it, you can—” Amelia started to say “get lost,” but caught herself in time, glancing at Ruby. “—leave.”

Daniel grinned, clearly enjoying every second of this. “Not a chance. I love it when you boss me around.”

Ruby didn’t quite understand what “boss me around” meant, but she still felt vaguely scandalized, as if her ears had just been dirtied.

Amelia ignored him. She knew from experience—engaging with Daniel only encouraged him.
