Ruby started yawning after a while, barely able to keep her eyes open.

Daniel scooped her up and carried her to the bathroom, helping her brush her teeth and wash her face. Then he tucked her into bed, pulling the covers up and soothing her to sleep with a gentle tone—a picture-perfect father, if there ever was one.

The hospital room grew quiet. Ruby soon drifted off.

Amelia felt drowsy too. Her gaze went unfocused, staring at nothing in particular, until Daniel’s face suddenly filled her field of vision.

“Why are you so close?” She pulled back, instantly on guard.

Daniel crouched in front of her, studying her face. “You’ve lost weight.”

“I’m dieting.” Amelia turned away, avoiding his eyes.

He reached out and gently turned her face back toward him. “Are you worried about Ruby losing weight? Why didn’t you call me if something was wrong? I’m your husband, not a stranger.”

Amelia was so tired of hearing that line. He loved to call himself her “husband,” but when it really mattered, he never acted like one.

Once, twice—even a third time now. Always the same story.

Thankfully, she’d stopped hoping for anything more; otherwise, she couldn’t imagine how much it would hurt.

“Go home, Daniel. I want to sleep.”

He noticed the exhaustion in her eyes and didn’t push it. “Alright. Ruby’s being discharged tomorrow. I’ll pick you both up.”

“No need.” Amelia turned away, her reply cold and distant.

But Daniel ignored her refusal. He stood, ruffled her hair, and left the room.

Outside the hospital, his tall figure flashed past the front entrance. Violet, waiting by the curb, caught sight of him.

“Daniel…”

But he didn’t hear her. He closed his car door and drove off without a backward glance.

Violet’s disappointment quickly turned to anger.

Her leg had been acting up that day, so she’d called Daniel. Only his assistant answered, telling her he was away on business out of town. Left with no choice, she’d come to the hospital herself.

So this was his “business trip”?

Half an hour later, Daniel emerged from the building.

He was holding a little girl’s hand—Bunny’s—and Bunny was clutching Amelia’s hand with her other.

Daniel and Amelia were laughing too.

But the sight cut Violet to the core.

She doubled over, pounding her numb, aching leg with her fist.

Why? Why did everything that should have been hers end up in someone else’s hands?

She didn’t even have a pair of healthy legs, and yet Amelia had it all—the perfect life, the happiness, the family. It was all supposed to be hers, not Amelia’s!
