When he answered, his voice sounded weak. “Violet, what’s wrong?”

She bit her lip, holding back the tears she usually let flow in front of him. Instead, she just asked, “Mogan, can your people help me with something?”

Mogan texted her a number. “Call him. If you need anything while I’m not in Willow Creek, he’ll take care of it.”

He paused, then added reassuringly, “Violet, don’t do anything reckless while I’m gone. Whatever it is, wait for me to come back.”

A wave of cold emptiness washed over Violet. Amelia was truly formidable—not only had she stolen Daniel, but she’d also forced Mogan to retreat to Elm City. Now Violet was left with nothing, her hands tied, told she couldn’t even fight back.
