I lifted the coffee cup, my fingers brushing the warm rim. I brought it close and breathed in the aroma.
The scent was rich but not overwhelming, with a faint nutty aftertaste. I took a small sip. The liquid slid over my tongue, smooth as velvet, without the sour bite of cheap coffee.
Even though I rarely drank hand–ground coffee, I could tell right away this wasn’t ordinary.
“This is excellent quality,” I said.
Ruth smiled.
“These beans come from Emerald Estate in Reshon. Even the richest families in Euron can’t always get them. Only a few pounds are harvested each year. That little sip you just took is worth half a million dollars.”
Half a million for a sip!
I nearly choked.
Under Ruth’s sharp gaze, I forced myself to stay calm and drew in a deep breath.
She kept that faint, polite smile on her face.
“Luis is the only successor of the Mooncrown Pack,” she said. “His grandfather passed away early. His parents died when he was six. I’ve poured everything into raising him.”
I lowered my head, tracing the gold rim of my cup with my fingertip as she continued.
“His nature has always been reckless, doing as he pleases. Spending a fortune to make a woman smile–yes, that’s exactly the kind of thing he would do. But money means nothing to our pack.”
She lifted her cup and sipped again. “It’s like this coffee. To you, it’s rare and precious. But really, only beans of this quality are worthy to match with us.”
I slowly raised my eyes, locking them on Ruth.
“Mrs. Eaton-

She raised a hand to stop me.
“Ms. Wiley, since this is our first meeting, let me give you a welcome gift.”
At her signal, a servant stepped forward and handed me a folder.
I froze for a moment before taking it, my fingers stiff, but I didn’t open it right away.
“Go on,” Ruth said gently, sipping her coffee again.
After a pause, I tore the seal and pulled out a stack of papers and a recording.

“This document transfers 30% of Mistbane Group’s shares to you,” Ruth explained. “That makes you the largest shareholder from today forward. As for this recording, it contained a conversation between Violet’s ex–boyfriend and another woman. Once this is released, she’ll be cleared of her scandal and regain her status quickly.”
Her smile stayed warm, almost kind.

hands gripping the folder grew cold and stiff, and I couldn’t help the bitter laugh
So this was Ruth. Sharp, thorough, and calculating.
She had dug into my life so carefully she even knew exactly what I wanted.
Without another word, I shoved everything back into the folder.
I looked at Ruth, who still wore that kind and gentle expression, and asked carefully, “Are you giving me this so I’ll leave Luis?”
She slowly set her cup down on the table. When her eyes met mine again, there was a layer of distance in them.
“For Alphas, having more than one woman is common. Especially for someone like my grandson, a pure–blood Alpha.”
She paused before adding, “But it’s one thing to like someone. Marriage is another. I don’t mind if you stay with him as his woman. But I need to remind you of my plan to form an alliance with Blackcreek Pack. Don’t even think about the Luna title.”
Her voice grew firmer. “I hope you understand your place, Ms. Wiley.”
My whole body went cold.

It seemed only by agreeing to be nothing more than a lover, or maybe even his side chick, could I stay by Luis’s side.
I don’t remember how I got home.
On the table sat the blinding document she had given me. I wanted so badly to throw it away.
I went into the kitchen, pulled a bottle of cold water from the fridge, and drank it in one go to calm myself down.
