After showering, I dried off and wrapped myself in a white towel before stepping into the living room.
Then I froze.
On the couch sat a familiar figure.
Luis lounged there, bent forward slightly, flipping through one of my design books I had left on the table.
He heard my footsteps and lifted his head. The moment his eyes met mine, something darker flickered in them.
After a pause, the corner of his mouth tilted up. “You like drawing?”
I dodged his intense stare and tried to sound casual.
“It’s just a random magazine. Why are you here?”
He slowly closed the magazine and tossed it back on the table. His eyes held a teasing glint. “What? Not happy to see me?”
I walked to the desk and put the folder into the drawer as naturally as I could.
The next second, Luis stood and crossed the room. He braced both hands on either side of me, his head lowering until it rested against my shoulder.
My body stiffened instantly.
“Just one day without me, and your body already forgot mine?” His warm breath brushed my ear, making it tickle.
I lowered my gaze and whispered, “I’m not feeling well.”
“Because I hurt you last night, right?”
I didn’t answer. Instead, I slipped out through the gap in his arm, trying to put distance between us.
Luis caught my wrist and pulled me back.

I stumbled and landed on his lap.

His arm wrapped firmly around my waist. His fingers toyed with the damp strands of my hair, brushing against my chest now and then.
A tingling rush spread across my skin, making me shiver without meaning to.
My mind screamed to push him away, but my body leaned into the warmth on its own.
I took a shaky breath and shoved his hand off. “Don’t … touch me.”
Luis cupped my face, forcing my face, which tilted to the side, to meet his eyes.
“What’s wrong? Who upset you?”
“Nothing. I just don’t feel like it today.”
He gave a crooked smile. “Did I say I was going to do anything?”
I felt some things bottled up inside; I could hardly breathe.
I was never the type to drag things out when I knew this relationship wasn’t going anywhere.
But when it came to breaking up with him, my mouth refused to let them out.
“I’m going to get some water.”
I stood up from his lap, walked straight to the fridge, and grabbed a cold bottle of water.
Luis’s POV:
“Don’t you think she’s acting strange today?”
Griffin’s low voice echoed in my head.
I kept my eyes on Deanna’s slender back and gave a small nod.
Strange was an understatement. From the moment she walked in, she avoided me, her eyes darting away every time I looked at her.
Just then, the red phone on the desk lit up.
A text flashed across the screen from an unsaved number. “Deanna, I’m sorry. Please come back to me.”

The moment I saw it, I knew exactly who it was.
I picked up the phone, clicked on the number, and checked the chat window.
“Happy Birthday!
“I’ll change. I’ll do anything you ask of me. Please forgive me.”
I tossed the phone carelessly back on the desk.
A mix of anger and possessiveness surged through me.

No wonder she’s been acting strange. Her old flame had crawled back. Or was she cold to me because she still missed him?
I stood, walked straight over, and wrapped my arm around Deanna’s waist. Without a word, I carried her toward the bedroom.
She let out a startled cry, her slippers hitting the floor with a soft thud. Her legs kicked wildly in the air.
“Luis! What are you doing?”
I didn’t answer. I threw her down onto the bed.
Her bathrobe slipped at the collar, revealing a pale shoulder. My throat tightened at the sight. My fingers moved to unfasten the top sapphire button of my shirt.
