Chapter 125 He Came Back for Me
Deanna’s POV:
When I opened my eyes, the sharp smell of disinfectant filled my nose.
Kathryn stood beside the bed, dabbing her tears with a silk handkerchief. “Deanna, sweetheart, how are you feeling? I’m so worried about you.”
“Where… am I?” My throat was so dry it felt like sandpaper scraping when I spoke.
“You were kidnapped and fell off a cliff. Jake tried to save you, but one of the kidnappers stabbed him with a wolfsbane dagger. Luckily, his guards got there in time and pulled you both out.”
Slowly, my mind began piecing everything back together.
My last memory was Jake running toward me before the kidnapper lunged and drove a knife into him.
Stacey helped me to sit up.
“Ms. Deanna, you were out for a whole day. Luna was so worried. Here, have some soup.”
Before I could answer, Kathryn lifted a spoon, ready to feed me herself.
I looked at that spoon and pressed my lips together.
“Let Stacey do it. You should go home.”
Her hand froze in midair. She opened her mouth like she wanted to say more.
In the end, she just sighed, gave Stacey a few instructions, and quietly left.
Two days later, there was a knock at the door.
The nurse pushed Jake inside, seated in a wheelchair.
I glanced at him briefly.
His side was wrapped in thick layers of bandages that covered half his torso. Even his arm was strapped down, hanging stiffly at his side. A few claw marks still crossed his face, reminders of the fight with the rogues.
He asked the nurse to step out, then turned to me.
“Deanna, are you okay?”
I pulled my gaze away and answered calmly, “Thanks to you, I’m still alive.”
Jake froze, then let out a low chuckle. But the moment he tried to smile, it tugged at his wounds.
He sucked in a sharp breath. Even so, he kept talking. “If you’ve got the strength to sass me, then I know you’re fine.”
closed the sketchbook and glared at him. “Both times I got kidnapped, it was because of you. So no, I don’t feel guilty. You can leave now.”

Jake frowned. “I didn’t mean to choose her over you this time.”
I gave a dry laugh. “Right. You just happened to end up in bed with Peggie, didn’t you?”
He froze. His face turned pale, and his breath caught. “I’m sorry, I-”
“You don’t have to apologize,” I cut him off. “Who you sleep with isn’t my problem.”
I leaned back on the bed, my voice steady but cold. “Just keep that crazy bitch under control. Tell her to stop coming after me. She helped plan the kidnapping this time.”
Jake’s eyes widened in shock, like he couldn’t believe what he’d just heard.
“Peggie would never do that.”
“Believe it or don’t.”
I was done arguing and decided to kick him out.
“Please show Mr. Olson out,” I said flatly. “I need to rest.”
