“Then come home to have dinner with me,” she said over the phone. “These days I need to make an appointment just to have a meal with my grandson.”
I narrowed my eyes, already running out of patience. “I’ve got things to do today. I’ll visit another time.”
Before she could reply, I hung up. Leaning back in the seat, I closed my eyes to rest.
Compared to the fake smiles and endless politics within the pack, I just wanted to get back to where Deanna was.
That was my real territory. No pack interests, no games–just her scent. It was the only thing that could calm the beast in me.
From the passenger seat, Aaron raised three fingers like he was taking an oath.
“Alpha, I swear to the Moon Goddess, I didn’t tell the pack where you went!” His voice shook.
Aaron reeked of fear. His pheromones gave him away–nervous, desperate, terrified that I might suspect him.
I looked up and shot him a cold glance before letting out a short, mocking laugh. “You wouldn’t dare.”
I’d handpicked Aaron from the lower–ranking werewolves in my pack. His life and his position both depended on me. He’d be an idiot to risk everything by reporting to my grandmother behind my back.
My feelings toward Grandma were complicated.
My parents died when I was little.
She was the one who raised me. She taught me how to lead the pack, how to fight for power, and how to survive in the ruthless world of werewolves.
But I knew her too well. Her love came with control and possession. She always had to have her hand in everything.

Occasionally she’d move pieces behind the scenes.
And most of the time, as long as she didn’t cross the line, I didn’t bother to stop her.
“Take me to Crestwood Park,” I ordered.
“Yes, Alpha.”
A while later, the car rolled to a stop in my private parking space.
I took the private elevator straight to the top floor.
The door unlocked with a soft click. I strode inside.

The place was silent. Too silent. The faint trace of her scent in the air was almost gone.
I walked straight to the bedroom and pushed the door open.
It was empty.
The bed was neatly made, the sheets folded perfectly at the edge.
If it weren’t for her clothes lying in the laundry basket, I’d have thought last night never happened.
“Haha!”
A low chuckle slipped out of my mouth–sharp and self–mocking.
She ran away again.
I stood still with one hand in my pocket. The sunlight pouring through the floor–to–ceiling windows stretched my shadow long across the marble floor.
As the pure–blood Alpha, I had everything–wealth beyond measure, power that made others bow. People looked up to me, depended on me, and feared me.
But with Deanna, for the first time in my life, I tasted defeat.
She could draw close whenever she wanted and walk away just as easily. Each time she did, that untouchable pride I’d always carried cracked a little. Something wild, and out of control, stirred inside me.
Deanna. You still couldn’t see me after all this time?

After a long time, I was ready to shut the door and leave.
Something crossed my mind; my eyes swept across the bedroom.

The nightstand was empty. The moonstone bracelet was gone. She had taken it with her.
Lindsay’s POV:
Ruth hung up the phone and lifted her gaze toward me. Her tone was calm, almost detached.
“Stop preparing dinner. Luis won’t be home tonight.”
“Yes, Mrs. Eaton.”
I placed the cranberry cookies on the dining table and took off my blue apron, handing it to one of the maids.
Then I walked over quietly and sat on the couch across from Ruth.
She took a slow sip of her tea and asked, without hurry, “How did things go today?”
I folded my hands neatly on my lap and replied respectfully, “I don’t think she’s worth your attention, Mrs. Eaton.”
