**Chapter 242: Beneath the Same Sky**
**Deanna’s POV:**
How I found myself in Luis’s sleek Porsche was a mystery, a foggy blur that I couldn’t quite piece together.
As the realization of my surroundings began to seep in, I noticed that we had come to a halt beside the tranquil riverside. The air was thick with a sense of stillness, broken only by the gentle lapping of water against the shore.
The neon lights from the opposite bank danced upon the surface of the river, twinkling like a constellation of stars scattered across a velvet sky. The reeds nearby swayed gracefully, their soft rustling whispering secrets to the night.
Luis, ever the enigmatic figure, lowered the convertible top with a smooth motion, leaning back against the plush leather seat. He pulled out a pack of cigarettes, tapping it lightly against his fingers, a habitual gesture that seemed to pause time for a moment. But then, as if struck by a sudden thought, he halted mid-motion and slid the pack back into his pocket, his gaze shifting toward me.
“Why did you want to get rid of it?” he asked, his voice steady but laced with an undercurrent of something deeper.
I kept my eyes fixed on the river, the words flowing from my lips calm and measured. “You should be asking whether the baby is even yours.”
His gaze dropped to my stomach, a flicker of confidence lighting up his features. A faint, almost smug smile crept onto his lips. “It’s mine. Every Alpha can sense the presence of their own pup.”
I felt a surge of defiance rise within me. I bit my lip, forcing the words out stubbornly. “No. It’s mine. Only mine.”
After a brief silence, I inhaled deeply, summoning the courage to meet his piercing gaze. “Luis, whatever we had is over. This child doesn’t change that.”
He offered a humorless smile, a bitter twist of his lips that made my heart sink. “So you want me to pretend it doesn’t exist? You think that’s even possible?”
I turned my gaze away, focusing on the reeds bending gracefully in the wind, their movements echoing my turmoil. “Then tell me, are you going to marry me?”
His frown deepened, and the silence that followed felt like a heavy weight pressing down on my chest.
A tiny spark of hope flickered within me, only to shatter as I let out a laugh, a sound tinged with disbelief.
What was I expecting? Deep down, I already knew the answer.
