I paused, realizing Luis had a point.

Still, he’d made me a promise–why pull back halfway now?

I honestly couldn’t figure out what was going through his head.

I took a breath and walked closer, stopping just about a foot away.

Even sitting down, Luis carried a natural authority, like he was born to run the show.

I pressed my lips together and said carefully, “I don’t buy that you’re so small–minded. You already agreed to put in eight billion, so you wouldn’t break your word.”

“Ms. Wiley, wrong again. I am that small–minded.”

He smirked, lips curling with a dangerous edge.

“Oh, wait–I shouldn’t call you Ms. Wiley. I should call you Arthur’s fiancée. After all, you two even tried on wedding dresses.”

My heart skipped.

How the hell did Luis know I tried on those dresses?

Was he there that day?

I quickly spoke up. “I can explain–that day was an accident.”

So I admitted, “No one forced me.”

The air in the office seemed to chill instantly.

A shiver crept up my spine, so I quickly added, “But it’s not what you’re thinking! Jake and I are over. I don’t go back on my word.”

Luis suddenly unfolded his legs and stood up.

He was a head taller, and when he stepped right in front of me, his shadow covered me completely.

His touch was light, but the tension in the air made my heart pound.

“Jake just tried sending me an invite to your ceremony. Maybe you’ll even have a baby with him in a few days. Deanna, are you really that good at faking it?”

We were way too close. His scent–woodsy with a trace of tobacco–wrapped around me, dizzying and strangely familiar. For a second, I almost drifted.

But the word baby jolted me back.

A baby in a few days? Impossible.

“No one’s ever put me in the role of the other guy before. You’re the first. So tell me–how should I feel?”
