Peggie’s POV:

When I opened my eyes after surgery, Jorge was standing by my side with a big smile.

He said excitedly, “Peggie, the operation was a success. From now on, you’re healthy again.”

I pushed myself up on the bed. “Jake… Where is he?”

Jorge reached out and supported my waist, helping me sit more comfortably.

“He came while you were in surgery. When he heard it went well, he left because of something urgent at work. I’ll let him know you’re awake.”

“No, Jorge. I’ll call him myself.”

The quiet hospital room filled with the sharp beeps of the ringing tone.

After a long pause, the line finally connected.

“Jake… “I softened my voice on purpose.

His reply was cool, almost distant. “Hmm, you’re awake.”

“Why aren’t you here? I thought you’d be the first person I’d see when I opened my eyes.”

There was a stretch of silence, broken only by the sound of papers shifting on his end. Then he said flatly, “Congratulations. The surgery was a success.”

My heart sank.

A wave of uneasiness washed over me. I asked carefully, “Jake, will you still come see me like before?”

“Peggie…” He paused, carrying a distance I had never heard before. “Your surgery went well. I can’t take care of you like I used to.” “Why?” My voice cracked as tears welled up. “Don’t you feel anything for me? All these years of looking after me–was it just pity?” “Now that you’re healthy, you can live on your own. And I need to be with Deanna.”

I couldn’t hold back anymore. I sobbed into the phone, but all I heard was silence.

After a long pause, his voice came again. “Peggie, you need to rest. I hope you can start a new life.”

Then he hung up.

I threw my phone hard against the bed. My eyes were burning red as I glared at Jorge. “You knew all along, didn’t you?”

Jorge stepped closer. “Peggie, you still have me. If you’re willing, I’ll take care of you.”

“I’m not willing!” I yanked the blanket off.

“I won’t give up on Jake!”
