Deanna’s POV:

I gave a cold laugh. “No need, Jake. We’re over. I’ll nail that on my own.”

Jake’s tone stayed calm and gentle. “I just want to help. You don’t have to be so harsh.”

“Help me?” I was so mad that I almost laughed out loud.

“One minute you wire ten million dollars to Peggie, and the next you want to help me? That’s the kind of help I don’t need.”

“How did you know about that?” His voice carried a hint of surprise, and then he gave a soft chuckle. “Deanna, are you jealous?”

“Jealous?” I felt like I’d just heard the funniest joke.

“Dream on! I wouldn’t be jealous of you. I just think it’s pathetic the way you try to have it both ways. How did I never see it before? No–truth is, I was blind back then.”

I hung up without hesitation. I didn’t want to waste another second on him.

Thinking about how I loved this man for five years made my chest ache with regret. What a fool I had been. I must have been blind for all these years.

Sitting in the driver’s seat, my chest rose and fell with anger. My fingers flew over the screen, quickly tapping on something and blocking Jake’s number for good.

I don’t care if Muses chose another mall; I would never beg him for help.

Just then, my phone started ringing again.

thought Jake had switched to another number to keep pestering me. Without checking the caller ID, I picked up and snapped, “Stop calling me! I don’t give a damn if my mall can’t land Muses! I don’t need your help!”

“Hmm?”

The voice was familiar but not the one I expected. It was low and magnetic, with a lazy drawl that carried a hint of charm.

I froze. That wasn’t Jake.

One quick glance at the screen told me–it was Luis.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, his tone curious. “Who made you this mad?”

Embarrassment washed over me. The anger that had been boiling inside vanished like cold water over fire. My voice dropped. “No one. Just someone pointless.”

After a few encounters with Luis, I could tell he didn’t like Jake much.

were sworn enemies.

“Strange,” he said. “If this person is so pointless, why’d he get you this worked up? Trouble at work?”

“Just work stuff.” I didn’t want to explain, so I quickly steered the conversation away. “Why are you calling

me?”

It was the first time Luis ever called me. I felt my nerves tightening.

“What, I can’t call if I don’t have a reason?”

His deep voice carried a kind of magnetism that made my ears tingle.

In my mind, I saw his striking face, edged with danger, and that half–smile he always wore.

“I didn’t mean it like that; I just—”

“Have dinner with me tonight.”

“Oh!” I thought it over. I didn’t have plans. “Alright.”

“You don’t want to?”

“No, it’s not that,” I said quickly.

“I’m just not used to it.”

“Cloudspire Restaurant. I’ll send a driver for you.”

I held the phone tighter and whispered, “Okay.” My heart was already beating faster without me even noticing.

Luis’s POV:

After hanging up the phone, I turned and walked to my desk. My fingers tapped lightly on the surface as I pondered about this.

I could’ve sworn I just heard Deanna mention something about Muses.
