Chapter 100: _ Here They Go

The fleeting figure he’d seen on the wall the night before – the one that had disappeared into Isleen’s window... it came right back to his head while looking at Liam right now.

He had to shake the thoughts off. He considered the odds. For Liam to climb the wall up to the window with such precision and speed, it’d require his inner wolf to be awakened.

It meant he didn’t use his normal strength. Yet, Liam was just twelve, and thus, his wolf was asleep still.

Wait a sec...

Liam did say something about his wolf being awakened back then when he was questioning him. Rhett had thought of it as a bluff back then as no young wolf was ever awakened before they clocked eighteen.

That Wasn’t logically possible that Liam’s wolf was awakening at twelve. But then again, based on his observations, Rhett had affirmed that Liam wasn’t any regular young pup.

Imagine a young wolf watching his adopted mother’s nakedness with such desires in his eyes. Something wasn’t straight about him. Maybe this was it.

Maybe Rhett was about to find out.

However, on a stronger note, that kind of speed required more than just a just maturing pup. Something else was at play here. Even if Liam’s wolf was awakening, he couldn’t have climbed at such a speed that convinced Rhett it was a stray cat.

What in the hell was going on?

Rhett allowed himself to speak to Isleen even though it almost seemed like the most troubling thing he’d ever had to do. Not taking her in his arms and enveloping her in the most intimate of embraces took a large chunk of his control.

Nonetheless, when they almost kissed, he blamed himself. How could he have gotten so carried away that he nearly made a mistake. Kissing a potential witness during an investigation would be a stain on his reputation.

Not to mention when that witness was his son’s girlfriend.

Argh.

He was slacking out. Isleen was doing that to him– making him slack out. He needed to learn to separate work from pleasure. Perhaps, he had been too focused on pleasure that he’d gotten that distracted.

Outside, during work hours, he needed to treat Isleen like she didn’t really matter. He’d be clingy and sweet with her when they were alone.

At least, until this nightmare was over.

He met Beowulf leaning casually against the porch railing, a book tucked under one arm and the darn Darius awaiting him in front of Beowulf’s duplex. He dismounted the weight of his gun holster comforting against his hip. A tense aura lingered in the air as he spotted them both with their disapproving gazes.

Rhett offered a curt nod to both of them. The Beta with his built that was more like a bear than a wolf, puffed out his chest. He had barely stood in front of them before Darius came countering him.

"Well, well, well," Darius rumbled, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Look who finally decided to grace us with his presence. Seems like even an Alpha’s time isn’t valuable enough for Gamma Rhett."
